Senior Power Systems Engineer information

What does a senior power systems engineer do?

A Senior Power Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical power systems, which can include power generation, transmission, and distribution networks. They often lead complex projects, oversee system reliability and efficiency, and ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. In this role, they may also mentor junior engineers, conduct system studies, and implement solutions for system improvements. Their expertise is crucial for supporting the safe and efficient delivery of electrical power in industries such as utilities, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior power systems engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Power Systems Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electrical engineering principles, power system analysis, and typically a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering along with several years of relevant experience. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as ETAP, PSS/E, MATLAB, and familiarity with relevant standards and certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) licensure are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, project management, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient design and operation of complex power systems.

What are some common challenges senior power systems engineers face when working on large-scale grid integration projects?

Senior Power Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, managing project timelines, and ensuring regulatory compliance when integrating large-scale renewable energy sources into existing grids. They must also address grid stability and reliability issues, particularly when dealing with variable generation from renewables. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate these complexities and deliver successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Senior Power Systems Engineer vs Power Systems Engineer?

Job description

Senior Systems Engineer with expertise in Requirements Based Engineering (RBE) and experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support the development, design, modeling, and integration of aircraft systems. In this role, you will work within a multidisciplinary team to develop and maintain requirements databases in DOORS NG, support development of system models using CAMEO and SysML, IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) tool development, drive digital engineering practices, and ensure system-level traceability across complex systems.
This is a hands-on technical role focused on enabling rapid, traceable, and scalable system development through digital tools. You will collaborate closely with system leads, hardware, and test teams to capture system architecture, decompose requirements, and validate system behavior through modeling.
Key Responsibilities
• Requirements Decomposition: Translate high-level system and mission requirements into structured models and ensure end-to-end traceability through DOORS NG, Jira or similar tools.
• MBSE Development & Maintenance: Create and maintain SysML-based models using CAMEO to represent system architecture, behavior, interfaces, and requirements across the aircraft engine lifecycle.
• Process assurance: Compliance assurance of the Systems plans (requirements validation, system model validation, and change management)
• Interface Definition: Model and manage system and subsystem interfaces to support hardware and software integration across aircraft, propulsion, avionics, and sensors.
• Digital Engineering Collaboration: Work closely with design, and test, teams to ensure consistent use of system models for verification planning and design validation.
• System Integration Support: Assist with integration efforts by using system models to inform development, identify dependencies, and support test readiness.
• Documentation & Compliance: Generate documentation to support airworthiness, safety, and programmatic reviews using MBSE artifacts, system models and Microsoft tools.
• Continuous Improvement: Advocate for Systems best practices, improve requirements development and modeling workflows, and support adoption of Systems related tools across engineering teams.
Qualifications
MUST HAVE:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
• 4+ years of experience in systems engineering and RBE roles supporting aerospace systems.
• Working knowledge of requirements tools such as DOORS NG and Jira.
• Working knowledge of SysML tools such as CAMEO.
• Familiarity with system engineering processes, V-model, and lifecycle traceability.
• Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
WE VALUE:
• 2+ years of experience in MBSE roles supporting aerospace systems
• 2+ years of experience using the IBM ELM suite of tools in roles supporting aerospace systems
• Experience modeling complex system architectures and interfaces.
• Hands-on experience with CAMEO Systems Modeler and a strong understanding of SysML.
• Understanding of modular open systems architecture (MOSA) principles.
• Deep understanding of ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-881, 882, and system safety frameworks.
• Exposure to airworthiness certification or flight test support.
Due to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, candidate must be a U.S. person, which is defined as, a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.
