What is a senior PCB design engineer?

Senior PCB Design Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing and developing printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They create detailed layouts, select appropriate materials, and ensure the designs meet electrical and mechanical requirements. Their role also includes collaborating with other engineers, reviewing designs for manufacturability, and troubleshooting issues during prototyping and production. Senior PCB Design Engineers typically have several years of experience and expertise in layout software, industry standards, and electronic components.

What are some common challenges faced by senior PCB design engineers when working on complex multi-layer boards?

Senior PCB Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing high-speed signal integrity, minimizing electromagnetic interference, and ensuring proper power distribution across multiple layers. Coordinating with cross-functional teams—like hardware engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing specialists—is critical to address layout constraints and manufacturability issues early in the process. Staying updated on evolving design tools and standards is also important, as is balancing tight project deadlines with the need for meticulous design verification and testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior PCB design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior PCB Design Engineer, you need advanced expertise in PCB layout, schematic capture, circuit analysis, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with EDA tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor Graphics, and familiarity with industry standards (IPC, ISO) are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding engineers apart in this role. These skills ensure robust, manufacturable designs that meet technical requirements and facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

Position Description
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer I will play an essential role in the planning, coordination, and completion of mechanical and broader MEP systems for complex building projects. The successful candidate will combine strong technical knowledge with sound project judgment, clear communication, and a collaborative approach to guiding work from early planning through construction.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with architects, owners, engineers, and other project partners to establish scope, budget, schedule, and technical objectives.

  • Support quality-assurance processes, technical reviews, project documentation, progress reports, and post-construction evaluations.
  • Provide technical guidance to multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior engineers in their continued professional development.
  • Serve as a trusted technical resource during project meetings, coordination sessions, and client presentations.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, preferably Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • At least 8 years of proven MEP design-consulting experience in Hawaii.
  • Advanced knowledge of building-industry codes, standards, and mechanical-system design practices.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, organization, and communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage priorities across multiple projects.

Desired Experience & Skills:
  • Professional Engineer licensure.
  • LEED accreditation.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit.
  • A collaborative leadership style and genuine interest in mentoring developing engineers.

Benefits:
Salary Range: $92,000-$120,000 annually, plus eligibility for a conditional bonus.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k), life insurance, disability coverage, and transportation benefits.
  • Generous paid time off, paid holidays, and a year-end office closure.
  • Professional development, mentorship, and opportunities for continued career growth.
  • Paid volunteer time and opportunities to contribute to the local community.
