What is a senior operational technology cyber security specialist?

A Senior Operational Technology (OT) Cyber Security specialist is an experienced professional responsible for securing and managing the cyber risks of industrial control systems, such as SCADA and PLCs, which operate critical infrastructure and manufacturing environments. They design and implement security policies, assess vulnerabilities, and respond to incidents that could affect both digital and physical operations. Their work ensures that operational technology systems remain resilient against cyber threats while maintaining safety and reliability. This role typically collaborates with both IT and engineering teams to bridge the gap between traditional information security and industrial environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior operational technology cyber security professional?

To thrive as a Senior Operational Technology Cyber Security professional, you need deep knowledge of industrial control systems (ICS), cybersecurity principles, and risk management, typically supported by a relevant degree and certifications like CISSP or GICSP. Familiarity with OT security tools, network monitoring systems, and incident response platforms is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills help you address threats and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to safeguard critical infrastructure, ensure operational continuity, and mitigate evolving cyber risks.

What are some common challenges faced by a senior operational technology cyber security professional when securing industrial control systems (ICS)?

A Senior Operational Technology Cyber Security professional often encounters challenges such as legacy system vulnerabilities, limited patching windows, and balancing security with uninterrupted operations. Industrial control systems are frequently built on older technologies that may not be compatible with modern security tools, making it difficult to implement standard protections. Additionally, these professionals must collaborate closely with engineering and operations teams to ensure that any security measures do not disrupt critical industrial processes. Successful candidates should be prepared to develop creative solutions that enhance security while respecting the unique constraints of operational environments.

Job description

Who We Are:
For over 35 years, ISC has provided safe, high quality electrical, instrumentation and controls solutions to global leading industrial manufacturers. With offices in Baton Rouge, Beaumont, Houston, Corpus Christi, and Columbus, as well as job sites around the country, ISC has grown our team as high 3,000+ associates and offers full-service engineering, construction, and maintenance solutions throughout the United States.
The Position:
ISC Constructors is looking for a motivated, early-career IT professional to join our growing IT team as a Security & Infrastructure Analyst. This is a hands-on role that spans both cybersecurity and infrastructure, giving the right candidate broad exposure across network administration, cloud infrastructure, identity management, and security operations. You will work directly with the Security & Infrastructure Manager and play a key role in protecting and maintaining the systems that support a leading industrial electrical contractor operating across multiple states.
This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate looking to build a well-rounded foundation in enterprise IT at a company that is actively investing in its technology infrastructure.
What You'll Do
  • Assist in the administration of network infrastructure including firewalls, switches, VPNs, and wireless access points across corporate and job site environments
  • Manage and monitor the email security gateway, including spam filtering, quarantine review, and policy configuration; administer simulated phishing campaigns to build security awareness across the organization
  • Assist in the investigation of security incidents - gathering logs, documenting findings, escalating appropriately, and contributing to post-incident reviews to improve future response
  • Support Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) - user accounts, group policies, and access management
  • Monitor security tools including endpoint detection and response (EDR), email security, and vulnerability scanners
  • Participate in vulnerability management and help track remediation efforts
  • Support backup infrastructure and assist with disaster recovery testing
  • Help maintain security documentation, policies, and risk registers
  • Contribute to cloud infrastructure administration (Microsoft Azure / Microsoft 365)

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Foundational knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewalls)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365 and Active Directory
  • Genuine curiosity about cybersecurity, you don't need to have all the answers, but you should want to find them
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow structured processes and standards
  • Effective communicator you'll work across the IT team and occasionally with field operations staff
  • CompTIA Security+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications are a plus but not required
    Why ISC Constructors
  • Direct mentorship from an experienced Security & Infrastructure Manager
  • Broad scope, you won't be siloed into one technology area
  • Exposure to the unique IT challenges of a multi-site industrial construction environment
  • A company that is actively growing and investing in technology as a strategic priority
  • Competitive salary, depending on qualifications

Other Information:
  • Excellent wages and complete benefits package.

  • ISC evaluates and hires applicants for employment based exclusively upon the applicant's merit. No applicant will ever be required to pay money (or any other form of compensation) to an ISC employee in order to be hired by or considered for employment with the Company.
  • This announcement is not intended to be a complete listing of all similar, miscellaneous, or incidental, duties, which may be required from day-to-day. ISC utilizes the multi-skill concept and expects all associates to perform other job requirements.
