Job description

About Jerritt Canyon

The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.

The Opportunity

The Geology Superintendent is responsible for leading all geological aspects of study, exploration, and mining operations, delivering accurate and timely orebody knowledge that drives safe, efficient, and sustainable site performance. This role will have an impact on the full spectrum of geological functions, including operational geology, grade control, geologic modeling, resource estimation, database management, reconciliation, and drilling programs.

The successful candidate will lead and develop the site-based geology team while ensuring alignment between geological understanding, mine planning, production, and long-term resource development. The Geology Superintendent plays a key role in integrating geological insights into the restart study, daily operations, and strategic business decisions. The role is anticipated to evolve from the study phase into the operational phase, allowing for a seamless continuum and ownership of the process.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership and Operational Geology

  • Ensure orebody knowledge is effectively integrated into mine planning, production decisions, stope/phase design, and operational risk management.
  • Oversee day-to-day operational geology workflows such as mapping, sampling, logging, ore-markup, material classification, and reconciliation processes to ensure optimal ore recovery and dilution control.
  • Establish and maintain systems that support safe, efficient, and industry-best practices in operational geology, resource estimation, geologic modeling, and database management.
  • Ensure the capture, interpretation, and communication of key geological insight, including structural controls, grade trends, alteration patterns, and geometallurgical indicators, to operations and senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with growth, underground, open-pit, and exploration teams to strengthen understanding of deposit geology and support ongoing resource and reserve development.
  • Ensure robust QA/QC for all geological data and interpretations, and drive implementation of corrective actions.
  • Provide leadership across all geological mining operational activities, including grade control, ore definition, short-range modeling, reconciliation, and geotechnical / geometallurgical interfaces as required.

Drilling & Resource Development

  • Lead and approve planning, proposals, cost estimates, and capital expenditure requests for all drill programs, including production, infill, near-mine, and exploration drilling.
  • Optimize annual drill budgets and execution plans to support both operational and long-term resource objectives.
  • Develop and lead exploration target ranking exercises to ensure a balanced approach to growth development.

Management & Leadership

  • Manage consultants, vendors, and contractors to ensure effective and technically sound project execution.
  • Oversee the Geology department budget, monitor variances, manage costs, and update forecasts as required.
  • Build strong, collaborative partnerships with key internal departments, including engineering, operations, processing, environment, growth, safety, and finance.
  • Track departmental KPIs and ensure timely delivery of work programs, models, reports, and operational support commitments.
  • Set clear performance objectives for direct reports, provide coaching and mentorship, and take corrective action when needed to achieve business outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain a structured professional development framework to build team capability. Recruit, mentor, and retain high-quality geological personnel.
  • Lead succession planning and create development pathways for individuals to assume critical roles.
  • Support ongoing professional development as required by professional or regulatory institutions and provide informal training across the organization to strengthen technical capability.

The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field; or Bachelor of Science degree with equivalent experience
  • Ten (10) years' relevant experience, including five (5) years' experience in a similar leadership role
  • Strong capability in resource estimation and geological modelling using software packages such as Leapfrog, and mining software for underground stope and open pit optimizers for resource reporting
  • Experience in both open-pit and underground mining environments
  • Experience in district exploration, near-mine exploration, and infill drilling campaigns
  • Ability to sign off as 43-101 QP
