Job description

An exciting career awaits you

At MPC, we're committed to being a great place to work - one that welcomes new ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, develops our people, and fosters a collaborative team environment.

Position Summary

The Natural Gas Originator builds and manages the physical commercial platform that supports MPC's natural gas trading and supply strategy. This role focuses on securing gas supply, valuing existing assets, and developing the infrastructure positions and counterparty relationships that create long-term commercial optionality for the trading desk. The originator operates at the intersection of physical markets, contract negotiation, and asset economics - translating deep market knowledge into structured supply agreements, transportation positions, and storage arrangements that the desk can actively monetize.

Beyond individual transactions, this position plays a strategic role in asset valuation, contract development, and long-term commercial positioning. A near-term priority is renegotiating supply, transportation, and storage contracts approaching expiration and maximizing the value of MPC's existing natural gas asset base. Success requires deep natural gas market knowledge, strong commercial judgment, an entrepreneurial mindset, a solid understanding of pipeline, storage and plant infrastructure economics, and the ability to execute complex deals within established risk and governance frameworks.

Key Objective & Responsibilities

Primary Objective:

  • Identify, value, and secure high-value natural gas supply, transportation, and storage positions that drive incremental commercial value through MPC's existing asset base and enhance the trading desk's overall market position
  • Develop, cultivate and maintain relationships with key producer customers and midstream providers
  • Ensure all transactions align with MPC's strategic, risk, and compliance framework

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate new opportunities across markets by analyzing fundamentals, regulations, infrastructure, and competitive dynamics.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to enhance market presence and uncover long-term partnership opportunities.
  • Lead the creation and execution of commercially viable deals aligned with strategic and risk frameworks, coordinating across legal, credit, and trading functions.
  • Ensure all activities comply with internal policies and maintain transparency through documentation, reporting, and risk mitigation.
  • Align with internal teams on supply, logistics, and capital planning to ensure cohesive execution and strategic consistency.
  • Work with trading and origination teams to assess impacts, manage exposures, and refine strategies across financial and physical positions.
  • Leverage market knowledge and relationships to anticipate shifts and shape organizational positioning in dynamic environments.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in origination, supply, trading, or commercial development, with demonstrated expertise in physical natural gas markets including supply contract negotiation, transportation and storage economics, and producer or midstream relationship management.
