Job Summary
This posting is for an opening within the Transmission Planning Modeling organization supporting the SPP region. This position is responsible for the development and maintenance of transmission system models and associated data utilized as part of transmission planning studies.
Job Description
Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at any title in the Engineer job family listed below.
What You'll Do:
  • Develop, maintain, and validate transmission system models used for planning, operational, and reliability studies in power system analysis tools (e.g., PSS®E, ASPEN, TARA, or equivalent).

  • Develop and maintain future projects (Load and generator changes, system upgrades, retirements, etc.) and update the as-built system models as the projects are put in service.

  • Support the development and validation of future models used for planning studies and compliance activities, including data validation and discrepancy resolution.

  • Coordinate as-built and future data with AEP operations, RTOs, and neighboring TOs to ensure data accuracy and consistency across the system.

  • In all functions, strive for data accuracy and consistency, using programmatic and manual reviews of potential errors, anomalies, and out of date modeling practices.

What We're Looking For:
Engineer(Grade 7)
  • Has typically acquired a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET* along with two or more years of related engineering experience.
  • Individuals with a Master's degree in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.
  • Individuals with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology will also be considered.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Engineer Sr (Grade 8)
  • Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or
  • 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*; Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Additional Requirements:
These are additional expectations for the job and could include specific work experience, license / certifications, preemployment testing, expectations about travel, shift work, etc.
  • Knowledge of electric transmission system planning principles and bulk power system operations.

  • Understanding of power flow, short-circuit, stability, and contingency analysis methodologies.

  • Familiarity with NERC reliability standards, MOD standards, and RTO modeling requirements (PJM, SPP, ERCOT, MISO, etc.).

  • Strong analytical, data management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work across engineering disciplines and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
