Senior Middleware Engineer information

What is a senior middleware engineer?

Senior Middleware Engineers are experienced IT professionals who specialize in designing, implementing, and managing middleware solutions that connect different software applications, databases, and services within an organization. They play a critical role in ensuring seamless communication and data exchange between systems, often working with technologies such as application servers, message brokers, API gateways, and integration platforms. Senior Middleware Engineers also provide technical leadership, troubleshoot complex system issues, and help optimize performance and security in middleware environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior middleware engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Middleware Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of middleware platforms, integration architecture, and distributed systems, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with tools such as IBM WebSphere, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Apache Kafka, and experience with automation and monitoring solutions is essential, along with relevant certifications. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset set top candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure reliable system integration, efficient troubleshooting, and effective cross-functional teamwork in complex IT environments.

What are some typical challenges a senior middleware engineer faces when integrating new technologies into existing enterprise systems?

Senior Middleware Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data security, and minimizing downtime during deployment. They must carefully plan migrations and develop custom solutions to bridge gaps between different platforms. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, such as developers, system administrators, and security specialists, is essential to anticipate potential issues and implement seamless integrations. Staying current with evolving middleware trends also helps address these challenges proactively.

What is the difference between Senior Middleware Engineer vs Middleware Developer?

Industry UsageUsed across finance, healthcare, telecom, and tech sectorsCommonly found in software development firms and IT departments
Search/Comparison IntentUnderstanding senior roles and responsibilities in middlewareFocus on development tasks and coding skills

The main difference is that a Senior Middleware Engineer typically oversees the design, integration, and maintenance of middleware systems at a higher level, often leading projects and teams. Middleware Developers focus more on coding and implementing middleware components. Both roles require similar technical skills, but the Senior Middleware Engineer has greater responsibilities in architecture and strategic planning.

Position Overview

The Senior Software Engineer (.NET) is a senior technical resource responsible for the architecture, design, development, and maintenance of enterprise applications primarily built on the Microsoft technology stack. This role leads solution design, converts business requirements into scalable system designs, and drives high-quality implementation across distributed systems.

This is a senior-level position that provides technical leadership for a pod of engineers (up to 5), ensuring delivery of robust, secure, and maintainable solutions. The role partners closely with architects, product owners, and cross-functional teams to deliver business-critical systems. Salesforce experience is strongly preferred in environments where .NET services integrate with or extend CRM workflows. This is a remote role, reporting directly to the Software Development Manager.

  • Provide technical leadership to a team of 3-5 engineers including task assignment, mentoring, and code quality oversight

  • Translate business and system requirements into technical designs, APIs, and services

  • Drive architecture decisions including microservices, event-driven systems, and cloud-native patterns

  • Design and implement integration layers between .NET systems and Salesforce (REST/SOAP APIs, middleware, event streaming)

  • Write and review technical specifications, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards

  • Conduct advanced code reviews and enforce best practices (SOLID, clean architecture, testability)

  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Salesforce developers, architects, and product owners

  • Provide production support and lead root cause analysis for complex issues across distributed systems

  • Participate in the full SDLC with strong emphasis on design, quality, and delivery

Qualifications

  • 5 - 8 years of software engineering experience with strong focus on C# and .NET (Core preferred)

  • Proven experience leading small engineering teams or pods

  • Deep expertise in object-oriented design, design patterns, and distributed systems architecture

  • Strong experience with RESTful API design, service orchestration, and integration patterns

  • Solid understanding of database design (SQL Server, NoSQL a plus)

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), automated testing, and DevOps practices

Salesforce (Preferred)

  • Experience integrating .NET applications with Salesforce via REST/SOAP APIs, Platform Events, or middleware (e.g., Mulesoft)

  • Familiarity with Salesforce data model, security model, and governor limits as they relate to external integrations

  • Exposure to Apex, Flows, and Lightning components to effectively collaborate with Salesforce engineering teams

  • Experience designing hybrid architectures (.NET services + Salesforce platform) for enterprise workflows

  • Understanding of data synchronization patterns, error handling, and retry strategies across platforms

  • Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, and debugging skills across multi-system environments

  • Effective communicator capable of working across business and technical teams

  • Ability to operate in fast-paced environments with evolving requirements
