Experience: Must have a minimum of 8 years of related experience providing business solutions engineering support, to include architectural design, engineering design, proof of concept development, pilots, analysis, results, and documentation.
Duties: Performs day-to-day activities required to assist and identify technology solutions that meet enterprise requirements. Maps functional requirements into technological requirements, and identifies technologies that meet the technological requirements. Conducts proof of concept, pilots, and demos for the purposes of evaluating the suitability of given technologies for meeting requirements. Evaluates the tradeoffs between competing solutions and develops quantitatively driven analysis of alternatives. Produces written analysis of research and recommendation papers that clearly describe the process followed; alternatives considered, evaluation criteria and rationale for recommendation and need for improvement.

Job Summary : The Senior Middleware Engineer will work closely with the Development, Server, DB, and other teams to deliver available and reliable infrastructure support for customer web application solutions. The successful candidate will work on the Middleware team to leverage the latest technologies from Cold Fusion, Docker, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, Red Hat, and VMware, in our IT environment that are critical to delivering customers IT infrastructure services. Middleware Platform Engineers are responsible for supporting legacy middleware footprint by establishing a well-designed architecture and tooling to support feature functionality in a scalable, stable, and well managed environment.
Job Description and Duties
• Full-time Onsite at DOT HQ, Washington DC. Ideal candidate will cover later shift providing support ending sometime between 5pm and 7pm daily.
• Once every 2-3 months support server infrastructure in a 24x7 on-call escalation capacity as part of a team rotation.
• Support the existing middleware infrastructure, troubleshoot incidents and outages, manage risk, and increase performance and efficiency. Work with business architects in support of developing middleware configurations.
• Serves as an escalation point for Middleware and troubleshooting, provides guidance and direction in resolution of escalated issues and/or complex production, application, or system problems.
• Support Application team with troubleshooting application outage issues.
• Serves as a subject matter expert in managing Middleware including proposing recommendations for architectural improvements, streamlining processes and troubleshooting during outages.
• Monitor OEM middleware element patching and upgrade recommendations.
• Execute processes for the proper maintenance and functioning of middleware systems (e.g., load balancing, tuning, configuration management).
• Execute all middleware system-level changes (e.g., initialization parameters) associated with underlying infrastructure.
• Maintain consistent middleware parameters and system settings across all like instances.
• Implement and administer appropriate middleware management tools across all middleware instances.
• Patch middleware software as required, per established development to QA to production life cycle.
• Provide hosting operations and engineering support for Web middleware application components.
• Provide training as required.
• Maintain and update environmental documentation, standard Operating Procedures, and engineering documentation.
• Perform other tasks as directed by Lead Engineers or Project Manager.
Required Education and Experience:
• Must have a minimum of 8 years of related experience providing business solutions engineering support, to include architectural design, engineering design, proof of concept development, pilots, analysis, results, and documentation.
• Possess experience with Apache Tomcat, WebLogic, Oracle application server, Oracle SOA suite, PHP, Python, IBM Infosphere, node.js, Microsoft .NET framework, Microsoft IIS, and RedHat JBOSS application platforms.
• Web server – middleware integration expertise with Microsoft IIS, Apache Tomcat, and Apache HTTPS
• Database – middleware integration expertise with Oracle and SQL
• Cloud integration – middleware integration expertise with AWS and Azure
• Server- Understanding of server administration elements as related to middleware applications.
Strong expertise in leading research, analysis, and developing recommendations for Tech Refresh alternatives for middleware.
• Experience implementing and managing middleware management tools across multiple middleware instances
• Experience with performing root cause analysis, risk identification, and risk mitigation
• Interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively.
• Demonstrated experience in a fast tempo ITSM support environment.
Preferred skills and qualifications:
Understanding server administration elements as related to middleware applications, including STIG settings.
Understanding networking concepts relating to web applications (e.g., TCP/IP, port mapping, routing, DNS masking, etc.)
Understanding Oracle and SQL databases in physical and cloud environments as consumed and manipulated by middleware applications.
• Understanding and ability to configure application middleware settings in accordance with Federal Guidelines including DISA STIGs.
• Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 operating system experience
