Job description

POSITION/JOB TITLE: Sr. Process Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Engineering and Technology

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Sr. Director of Asset Optimization or Dir of Technology

TRAVEL Extensive (up to 75%)

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for pioneering and commercializing new technology and enhancing performance of existing technology at our facilities. Conducts research, oversight of test programs in the field with vendors, customers and plant teams executing trials and programs. Contribute to the development of technology programs and platforms, create and execute test plans, analyze and report results to key stakeholders, provide recommendations to facilities, senior management and customers. Actively participate as a team leader of multidisciplinary teams within the technology development space.

Provide support for Foundry Coke making efforts offering customer support, troubleshooting process issues, and optimization of operations as required.

Support capital projects, utilization of engineering knowledge to define and optimize process design from conceptual stages, modelling, basic design, detailed engineering, installation, commissioning and start-up. Capable of developing and utilizing process unit and plant-wide material and energy balances to optimize operations, develop and review process flow diagrams, piping and instrument diagrams, equipment specifications, general process engineering documentation and deliverables. Primary contact for all engineering reviews for process improvement initiatives. Works closely with the corporate engineering group, plant management, and engineering regarding all operations, maintenance and engineering.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will assist or lead efforts on:

  • Researches and provides recommendations for technical opportunities and priorities of the company.
  • Researches processes and equipment being developed or implemented worldwide in related industries.
  • Develops conceptual alternatives for processes and equipment for improvement of existing processes and development of new processes
  • Performs data mining and statistical analysis of past plant operations data from data historian to troubleshoot and to improve plant performance
  • Develops and executes test protocols in order to determine the viability of a new technology
  • Leads multifunctional groups in the development, proof-of-concept testing and application of new technologies
  • Evaluates technologies and operations through the application of heat/material balances and engineering fundamentals
  • Writes or manages the preparation of final test reports with conclusions and recommendations
  • Works with Project Development, Engineering, Operations, Purchasing and Business Development to develop designs, test protocols and implementation of changes
  • Interfaces with Engineering and Operations during and after implementation of new technology, follows up with Operations to measure success and solve problems that may have developed
  • Manages vendors of materials and services to provide special needs for testing and for newly designed equipment
  • Visits domestic (countrywide) customers for technical support and to run trials of new technology or products
  • Prepares formal presentation materials from technology development activities/tests
  • Assists Business Development in the technical evaluation of new business opportunities
  • Performs scientific discovery by managing laboratory activities, developing test methods and analyzing lab results
  • Assist with patent applications
  • Extensively travel to the Jewell facility in Vansant, VA for support of Foundry Coke Initiatives.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Educational or working knowledge about several technical areas including but not limited to, combustion, high temperature materials, material handling, heat & material balance programs, waste heat recovery, environmental engineering processes, and project management.
  • Strong chemistry or chemical engineering background a plus
  • Excellent Computer skills required
  • Good communication & inter-personal skills a plus
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in the use of process modelling software is a plus
  • New Product Development, New Process Development and/or Process/Project Engineering a plus
  • Experience in Large Scale Environmental Controls such as flue-gas desulphurization systems is preferred

  • Strong experience with statistical analysis a plus.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS / WORK EXPERIENCE: F

  • S. in Engineering minimum (Chemical preferred).
  • 7-10 years or more (10+ years preferred) relevant hands on experience required. Experience in related industries or research facility preferred.
  • Must have strong hands-on experience as well as effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Must have experience working in an industrial plant.
  • Incumbent must be self-motivated and able to self-prioritize tasks with minimal guidance.

Ideally the candidate will be located near one of our Facilities or near the Headquarters in Lisle, IL. Alternative locations (e.g. remote office or Jewell facility co-location) may be considered in some unique circumstances.
