Job description

Farmington Country Club is a premier private club with a century of excellence, a staff of 500+, and a campus spanning golf, racquets, aquatics, and dining. We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer to serve a senior technical authority within our IT organization, owning the architecture, performance, and security of the Club's core infrastructure.
This position is designed for an engineer who operates with a high degree of independence, exercises sound architectural judgment, and takes genuine ownership of outcomes. You will partner directly with the Director of IT to establish technical standards, oversee our co-managed MSP relationship, and maintain the infrastructure reliability expected in a premier, member-focused environment. Standard hours are regular business hours; occasional on-call availability is required for critical infrastructure events.
Some Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and optimize the VMware vSphere / vSAN environment, including capacity planning, performance tuning, and host lifecycle management
  • Manage HPE server hardware lifecycle: firmware, health monitoring, and replacement planning
  • Own backup and disaster recovery operations using Veeam, including restore testing and RTO / RPO compliance
  • Maintain Active Directory and Entra ID infrastructure in a hybrid identity environment
  • Design and maintain Cisco switching infrastructure across all Club facilities, including new construction projects
  • Administer Ruckus wireless, including event and seasonal coverage planning
  • Manage FortiGate firewall configuration, network segmentation, and Zero Trust application control
  • Support the MDR/EDR platform, vulnerability management program, and conditional access policies

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Primarily on-site at the Club's Charlottesville, VA campus, with occasional work across golf, racquets, aquatics, dining, and event facilities.
  • Must be available for scheduled and emergency after-hours support, particularly during major Club events and tournaments.
  • Ability to lift and move IT equipment (up to 50 lbs) and work in server room, network closet, and mechanical space environments.

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in systems and network administration, with demonstrated ownership of VMware vSphere environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Cisco switch configuration and deployment (VLANs, trunking, spanning tree, QoS).
  • Experience administering Active Directory and/or Entra ID in a hybrid identity environment.
  • Working knowledge of firewall administration, network segmentation, and security fundamentals (FortiGate experience strongly preferred).
  • Experience with enterprise backup platforms (Veeam or equivalent) and disaster recovery practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting methodology and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical issues for non-technical stakeholders and staff.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Industry certifications such as VCP, CCNA/CCNP, Security+, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) and Unity Connection, particularly end-user phone and voicemail provisioning, is a plus.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting and/or Power Automate for operational automation.
  • Prior experience in hospitality, club, resort, or other member/guest-facing environments where uptime directly affects customer experience.
  • Familiarity with vulnerability management tools, MDR/EDR platforms, and Zero Trust application control frameworks.
  • Experience supporting technology standards for construction or renovation projects.
