Senior Master Software Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Master Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Master Software Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in software architecture, programming languages, and system design, often supported by a computer science degree and extensive industry experience. Expertise in tools such as version control systems (e.g., Git), CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and familiarity with frameworks relevant to the tech stack is essential. Exceptional problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you mentor teams and drive complex projects to completion. These capabilities are crucial for delivering robust, scalable solutions and fostering innovation within engineering teams.

What is a Senior Master Software Engineer?

A Senior Master Software Engineer is a highly experienced software professional who leads the architecture, design, and development of complex software systems. They often mentor other engineers, set technical direction, and ensure best practices are followed across projects. This role typically requires deep expertise in multiple programming languages, frameworks, and software development methodologies. Senior Master Software Engineers play a critical role in both technical leadership and hands-on coding, often collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable and robust solutions.

What is the difference between Senior Master Software Engineer vs Lead Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Master Software EngineerLead Software Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires extensive experience, advanced degrees, and certifications in software developmentSimilar credentials, often with additional leadership or project management certifications
Work EnvironmentFocuses on complex technical problem-solving, architecture, and mentorship within engineering teamsCombines technical expertise with team leadership, project oversight, and stakeholder communication
Industry UsageCommon in large tech firms, R&D, and specialized engineering rolesWidely used across tech companies, especially in roles involving team coordination and project delivery

The Senior Master Software Engineer is primarily focused on technical mastery and innovation, often working independently or mentoring senior staff. In contrast, the Lead Software Engineer combines technical skills with leadership responsibilities, managing teams and projects to ensure successful delivery. Both roles require strong technical backgrounds, but their focus areas differ, with the Senior Master emphasizing technical depth and the Lead emphasizing team and project management.

How does a Senior Master Software Engineer typically mentor and support junior team members?

Senior Master Software Engineers often play a crucial role in mentoring less experienced engineers by conducting code reviews, sharing best practices, and providing guidance on complex technical challenges. They foster a collaborative environment by organizing knowledge-sharing sessions and pairing with junior developers on challenging tasks. This mentorship not only accelerates the growth of team members but also helps maintain high code quality and consistency across projects.

Job description

SPACE SYSTEMS

At Rocket Lab, we're not just launching rockets - we're building the future of space. Our Space Systems team builds everything from complete spacecraft, precision payloads to the components and subsystems that allow them to thrive in space, like solar panels, flight software, star trackers, optical systems, separation systems, radios, and more.

Our Space Systems team has enabled more than 1,700 missions, ranging from interplanetary exploration, in-space manufacturing to national security and defense initiatives. The team has built spacecraft, payloads, and components for missions to the Moon and Mars, working with partners including NASA, the Space Development Agency, and the U.S. Space Force. Whether it's a single high-performance spacecraft, constellation, or the vertically integrated components that help them get to space - our world class Space Systems team is empowering some of the boldest and most ambitious space missions.

SENIOR MASTER SCHEDULER II

Based onsite at Rocket Lab's global headquarters in Long Beach, CA, the Senior Master Scheduler II is a centerpiece of all schedule-related activities supporting Space Systems development and manufacturing. In this role, you aren't just managing a schedule; you are optimizing a high-velocity value chain. You will be counted on to identify missing pieces in day-to-day operations, support the implementation of process improvements, and help drive new scheduling norms across the Space Systems group. Our ideal candidate is an assertive, creative thinker who loves building best practices and improving processes in a fast-paced, technically focused environment.

WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO:

  • Develop, maintain, and analyze schedules for Rocket Lab Space Systems programs. Ensure vertical and horizontal integration across all program tiers.
  • Ensure schedules are aligned with project objectives and resource availability. Identify potential bottlenecks and support the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with Project Managers, Engineering, and Supply Chain to gather accurate data and ensure program signals are reflected with surgical precision.
  • Create and deliver timely schedule reports and dashboards. You will help apprise Program Managers of schedule performance and "margin erosion."
  • Create and maintain scheduling tools and processes (using ERP/MRP, SQL, or PowerBI) that improve the efficiency and quality of reporting.
  • Provide clear priorities to production teams and manage "push/pull" signals to reduce lead times and ensure delivery targets are met.
  • Support root cause analysis for schedule slips and help implement scalable solutions using Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen principles.

QUALIFICATIONS YOU'LL BRING:

  • 8+ years of experience as a Scheduler in a New Space, Aerospace, or other technical industry, and a bachelor's degree or equivalent years of work experience (12+ years of total work experience).
  • Detailed knowledge and familiarity with MS Project and JIRA
  • Demonstrated ability to read technical documentation and understand complex hardware assembly sequences
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems
  • Basic experience writing SQL queries or building data visualizations (IE. Power BI) to track health metrics
  • U.S citizenship is required, due to program requirements

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects
  • Infor LN ERP experience
  • Exposure to VBA or Python to automate scheduling workflows
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance

This position may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, computer work, and occasional exposure to moderate levels of noise, dust, and fumes in production areas.
