What is a senior malware reverse engineer?

Senior Malware Reverse Engineers are cybersecurity professionals who specialize in analyzing malicious software to understand its behavior, origin, and impact. They use advanced tools and techniques to decompile, debug, and dissect malware, often to develop countermeasures or aid in incident response. Their work helps organizations detect, prevent, and mitigate cyber threats. Typically, they have extensive experience in programming, operating systems, and network protocols, as well as a deep understanding of threat landscapes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior malware reverse engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Malware Reverse Engineer, you need deep expertise in computer science, assembly language, malware analysis, and strong experience with reverse engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications. Mastery of tools like IDA Pro, Ghidra, OllyDbg, and familiarity with operating system internals and networking protocols is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, analytical thinking, and clear communication skills help you effectively investigate threats and share findings with technical and non-technical stakeholders. These competencies are critical to accurately dissect malicious code, develop mitigation strategies, and strengthen organizational cyber defense.

What are some common challenges faced by senior malware reverse engineers when analyzing advanced threats?

Senior Malware Reverse Engineers often encounter highly obfuscated or polymorphic malware designed to evade detection and analysis. These threats can require advanced techniques, such as dynamic analysis in controlled environments, to unravel their true behaviors. Additionally, staying updated with evolving tactics used by threat actors is essential, as malware authors frequently adopt new anti-analysis methods. Collaborating closely with threat intelligence teams and sharing findings is a key part of overcoming these complex challenges.

What is the difference between Senior Malware Reverse Engineer vs Malware Analyst?

AspectSenior Malware Reverse EngineerMalware Analyst
Required CredentialsAdvanced reverse engineering skills, certifications like GREM, OSCPBasic reverse engineering, malware analysis certifications, security certifications
Work EnvironmentDeep technical analysis, reverse engineering malware samplesAnalyzing malware behavior, creating reports, threat intelligence
Employer & Industry UsageCybersecurity firms, government agencies, large corporationsSecurity teams, incident response, threat intelligence units

The main difference is that Senior Malware Reverse Engineers focus on dissecting and understanding malware at a code level, often developing tools or signatures. Malware Analysts typically analyze malware behavior and create reports to inform security measures. Both roles require strong technical skills, but the reverse engineer role is more specialized in code analysis and reverse engineering techniques.

Job description

Senior Linux Kernel Software Engineer

Build Security Where It Matters Most

Join an elite engineering team developing next-generation cybersecurity technology that protects enterprise infrastructure from the inside out. We build security at the Linux kernel level, creating advanced defensive capabilities that stop sophisticated threats before they reach user space.

If you enjoy solving complex operating system challenges, optimizing kernel performance, and developing technology that has a direct impact on enterprise security, we'd like to talk with you.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop Linux kernel modules and low-level security components.

  • Build kernel-based monitoring, policy enforcement, and system protection capabilities.

  • Work with Linux internals including memory management, process scheduling, networking, filesystems, and device drivers.

  • Collaborate with security researchers and software engineers to integrate kernel technology into enterprise security products.

  • Analyze kernel crashes, optimize performance, and troubleshoot complex system-level issues.

  • Research emerging attack techniques and develop resilient kernel-level defenses.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional Linux kernel development experience.

  • Expert knowledge of Linux kernel internals, kernel modules, device drivers, and system architecture.

  • Advanced C/C++ programming skills.

  • Experience debugging kernel code using GDB, KGDB, crash, ftrace, perf, or similar tools.

  • Experience developing secure, reliable, high-performance kernel software.

  • Background in cybersecurity, endpoint security, EDR, malware detection, or operating system security.

Preferred Experience

  • Linux Security Modules (LSM)

  • eBPF

  • Kernel networking or filesystem development

  • Secure Boot, SELinux, AppArmor, or kernel hardening

  • Reverse engineering or vulnerability research

  • Kernel exploit mitigation techniques

  • Open-source Linux kernel contributions

Why You'll Love This Role

  • Develop technology that operates at the deepest level of the Linux operating system.

  • Solve challenging kernel engineering problems that few developers ever encounter.

  • Work alongside experienced security researchers and operating system experts.

  • Make a direct impact on products protecting critical enterprise infrastructure worldwide.

  • Competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and significant opportunities for technical growth.

If you're passionate about Linux internals, kernel development, and building world-class cybersecurity technology, we'd love to hear from you.
