What does a senior machine learning engineer do?

A Senior Machine Learning Engineer designs, develops, and implements machine learning models to solve complex problems. They are responsible for selecting appropriate algorithms, preprocessing data, and optimizing model performance. Additionally, they collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to integrate machine learning solutions into production systems. Senior engineers also mentor junior team members and contribute to setting technical direction for machine learning projects.

What are some common challenges senior machine learning engineers face when deploying models to production, and how can they be addressed?

Senior Machine Learning Engineers often encounter challenges related to model scalability, maintaining performance in real-world scenarios, and ensuring reliable integration with existing systems. Addressing these challenges typically involves thorough testing, implementing robust monitoring for model drift, and collaborating closely with DevOps and software engineering teams to streamline deployment pipelines. Staying updated on best practices in MLOps and adopting tools for automated deployment and monitoring can greatly improve the reliability and efficiency of production models.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior machine learning engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of machine learning algorithms, statistical modeling, and programming languages like Python or Java, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Devon Energy is hiring a Senior Reservoir Engineer in Pittsburgh

Job Profile Summary:

Devon Energy is seeking a Senior Reservoir Engineer to drive inventory growth across the Appalachian Basin. This role will focus on identifying, evaluating, and maturing opportunities that expand Devon's inventory position through acquisitions, joint ventures and leasing. In addition, this role will lead technical and economic evaluations supporting drilling, completion, spacing, and field development decisions across Devon's existing assets.

The successful candidate will combine reservoir engineering expertise, commercial acumen, and data-driven decision making to influence capital allocation and growth strategy across the Appalachian Basin. This is a highly visible role with direct exposure to senior leadership and significant opportunity to influence the scale, inventory depth, and long-term direction of Devon's Marcellus Business Unit.

We are looking for a highly independent engineer who thrives in ambiguous environments, proactively identifies opportunities, challenges conventional thinking, and drives initiatives from concept through executive recommendation with minimal supervision.

This position is based on site at our Marcellus Business Unit office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Proactively identify, evaluate, and champion acquisition, leasing, and joint venture opportunities capable of materially expanding Devon's Appalachian inventory position

Lead multidisciplinary evaluations with geoscience, operations, and land teams supporting acquisition opportunities and field development plans

Develop and recommend field development plans, well spacing strategies and completion designs to maximize long-term asset value

Conduct well performance analysis, pressure interpretation, volumetric calculations, recovery method assessments, and production decline curve evaluations

Perform economic analysis of field development programs and acquisition and leasing opportunities using Excel, ARIES, ComboCurve and AI tools

Gather, organize, and interpret large datasets to define reservoir characteristics and generate technically grounded well performance predictions

Evaluate Lease Operating Expenses (LOE) and operational costs for accuracy and alignment with asset performance

Lead special projects as needed, including advanced reservoir characterization and generation of various basin-wide well performance models

Create decision-ready technical and economic narratives that enable rapid executive decision-making

Maintain a basin-wide perspective on operator activity, valuation trends, acreage availability, and emerging development opportunities across the Appalachian Basin

Mentor and develop junior engineers

Skills and Experience:

Proven success supporting acquisitions, divestitures, acreage trades, joint ventures, and large-scale strategic transactions

Demonstrated experience leading field development plans, optimizing well spacing and completion designs, and making capital allocation recommendations

Strong understanding of upstream valuation methodologies and asset transaction processes

Advanced use of ARIES, Spotfire, ComboCurve, Whitson+ and Excel for technical and economic evaluations

Experience leveraging AI and machine learning tools to identify opportunities, accelerate asset evaluations, and improve decision quality

Extensive experience with reservoir engineering methods, including material balance, rate transient analysis, volumetric calculations, and type curve generation

Demonstrated understanding of Appalachian Basin geology, well performance, spacing, and competitive operator activity preferred

Advanced capability in analyzing large datasets with robust statistical and machine learning workflows

Demonstrated ability to create executive-level investment recommendations for acquisition or capital allocation decisions

Demonstrated ownership, initiative, and bias for action, with the ability to operate independently while building alignment across technical and commercial disciplines

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree required: Petroleum, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or closely related field

MS Finance, MS Economics or MBA preferred

Years of Experience:

8+ years of experience in reservoir engineering or related technical discipline preferred

Investment banking, private equity, corporate development, or business development experience preferred
