Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

The main difference is that Senior Linear Accelerator Engineers focus on designing, maintaining, and improving linear accelerator systems from an engineering perspective, while Medical Physicists specialize in ensuring safe and effective radiation treatment for patients. Both roles require specialized knowledge but serve different functions within the healthcare industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Linear Accelerator Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Linear Accelerator Engineer, you need expertise in accelerator physics, electronics, mechanical systems, and a relevant engineering degree, often with several years of experience in medical or research accelerator environments. Familiarity with technical tools such as LINAC control software, radiation safety systems, and certifications like Certified Medical Physicist or OEM-specific training are typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and manage complex projects. These skills ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of linear accelerators, which are critical for both patient safety and research outcomes.

What are Senior Linear Accelerator Engineers?

Senior Linear Accelerator Engineers are specialized professionals responsible for the maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of linear accelerator machines, which are critical in medical radiation therapy and research. They ensure these complex devices operate safely and efficiently, often working closely with medical physicists and clinical staff. Their role includes performing preventative maintenance, resolving technical issues, and implementing upgrades to meet compliance and safety standards. Due to the technical and safety demands of the job, they typically have advanced training in engineering, electronics, or medical equipment technology, along with years of experience in the field.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Linear Accelerator Engineers in maintaining and troubleshooting equipment?

Senior Linear Accelerator Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing complex system malfunctions, minimizing equipment downtime, and ensuring compliance with strict safety standards. The role requires quickly troubleshooting both hardware and software issues in high-pressure situations, often collaborating with physicists, radiation therapists, and service vendors. Staying updated on the latest technological advancements and regulatory changes is essential, as is balancing preventive maintenance with urgent repairs to support uninterrupted clinical operations.

RF Systems Engineer

Nusano

West Valley City, UT • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 5 days ago

Job description

Nusano is redefining the production and supply of isotopes to support precision medicine, advanced diagnostics, therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, and national security needs. Through proprietary accelerator‑driven production platforms and integrated nuclear chemistry capabilities, Nusano is building a next‑generation isotope supply ecosystem that emphasizes reliability, safety, and innovation.
We are seeking an experienced RF Systems Engineer to join our team in West Valley City. The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for the development and maintenance of the RF systems that make up Nusano's production platform, primarily its Linear accelerator.
The RF systems, each including a low-level drive, high power amplification, and ancillary subsystems, integrate to produce 2MW peak and 300kW average power at 352 MHz power Nusano's accelerator platform. These systems require knowledge in low level RF design and operation; understanding of the interplay with high power RF is desirable. High availability of these systems is a must for Nusano to meet its radioisotope production goals supporting applications in cancer care. Future opportunities in this discipline may include Nusano's radioisotope separation and next generation of particle production machines.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
  • Active (hands-on) participation within the team that designs, develops, installs, integrates, and maintains the RF systems, ensuring that they meet high-availability performance and reliability requirements.
  • Work with technical staff to develop and implement procedures for systems operation and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with the RF system and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for the RF systems, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and procedures.
  • Work with external vendors to procure and integrate RF components and systems.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment in accordance with established safety protocols and regulations.
  • Keep up to date with new developments and technologies in RF engineering and related disciplines.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and technical staff to develop and implement improvements to the systems and associated components.
  • As requested, perform discipline-related calculations, simulations, and analyses.
  • Perform other duties as mutually agreed upon with your supervisor.
  • Ensure that the work of self and others is carried out in a safe manner with a focus on excellence and meeting company goals.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum bachelor's degree in electrical or RF engineering or equivalent.
  • Understanding of RF controls and P&ID
  • Familiarity with, and at least 3 years of demonstrated hands-on experience with RF systems and measurement techniques and test equipment for testing and evaluation purposes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnosis.
  • Effective interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of requisite safety protocols and regulations.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Demonstrated operational/hands-on experience, including troubleshooting skills on systems with high up-time requirements
  • Familiarity with EPICS-based controls
  • Knowledge and experience with antenna design and EMI filtering techniques
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Working knowledge of modeling and simulation codes commonly used for electrical engineering such as Matlab, SPICE, ETAP.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be comfortable working in a radiation-producing facility.
  • Must be comfortable working with RF-producing equipment and high voltage/high current systems.
  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment, laboratories, and production environment
  • Use of a computer with repetitive use of keyboard and mouse.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Available for off-hours consultation and/or call-in.
