Overview:

We are seeking a Senior In Vivo Radiological Engineer who will focus on In Vivo operations and administration of the Internal Dosimetry Program Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position resides on the Nuclear and Radiological Measurements (NRM) team of the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) under the Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The ORNL Internal Dosimetry Program is accredited by the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) for Radiobioassay (In Vivo and In Vitro), for which NRM provides whole body counting, lung counting, and wound counting services at ORNL and other DOE prime contractors in Oak Ridge, TN.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the whole-body counting, lung counting, and wound counting capabilities, facilities, instrumentation, and metrics.
  • Review and approve in vivo measurement results, calculations, logs, and QC data.
  • Ensure that equipment maintenance and calibrations are kept up to date.
  • Maintain DOELAP accreditation for the in vivo counting laboratory.
  • Ensure that in vivo laboratory personnel are trained and qualified to perform their assigned duties.
  • Develop/revise/maintain procedures and technical documents related to the in vivo laboratory instrumentation and operations.
  • Participate in incident/accident-based investigations requiring in vivo measurement support due to potential intakes of radioactive material.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and other technical issues as necessary.
  • Develop equipment life-cycle schedule/plan.
  • Manage data for the ORNL Internal Dosimetry Program. Serve as the administrator/ software owner for the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) used for Internal Dosimetry operations and work with NRPD personnel, IT personnel, and other supporting groups to maintain and improve the LIMS.
  • Assess LIMS user requests and implement changes that keep the system aligned with evolving operational needs, including new assays, workflows, and system integrations.
  • Interface with other ORNL Internal Dosimetry Program technical staff, auditors, customers, vendors, and suppliers, as required.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, verifications, and surveillances.
  • Support other activities in the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group as needed.
  • Ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL’s ESH&Q policies, standards, and procedures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in health physics, nondestructive assay, or operational radiation protection.
  • Demonstrated experience with nuclear measurements and gamma spectroscopy applications.
  • Knowledgeable of laboratory quality assurance processes and procedure development.
  • Experience with relational databases, SQL, and scripting languages (e.g. Python, PowerShell).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced science or engineering degree in directly related discipline (e.g. health physics, physics, radiochemistry, etc.) will be given appropriate consideration in lieu of experience.
  • Well versed in current regulatory and consensus standards for radiobioassay.
  • Advanced computing skills, including data reduction, analysis, and presentation.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with laboratory information management systems.
  • Knowledge of Mirion’s Genie 2k, APEX In-vivo, and Abacos2K software applications with HPGe and NaI detectors.
  • Knowledge of in vitro radiobioassay analyses and workflow.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

  • Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
  • To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
