What is a senior LabVIEW test engineer?

Senior LabVIEW Test Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain automated test systems using National Instruments' LabVIEW software. They are responsible for creating test scripts, debugging hardware and software issues, and ensuring product quality through rigorous testing processes. In addition to technical expertise in LabVIEW, they often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional groups to deliver robust testing solutions. Their work is critical in industries such as electronics, aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing, where automated testing and data acquisition are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior LabVIEW test engineer?

To excel as a Senior LabVIEW Test Engineer, you need deep expertise in LabVIEW programming, test automation, electronics, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with National Instruments hardware, test management software, and certifications such as NI Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) or Architect (CLA) are often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set outstanding engineers apart. These skills ensure the efficient design, implementation, and troubleshooting of automated test systems critical for product quality and reliability.

What are some common challenges faced by senior LabVIEW test engineers when working on complex automated test systems?

Senior LabVIEW Test Engineers often encounter challenges related to integrating legacy hardware with modern software, maintaining code scalability for evolving test requirements, and ensuring system reliability under tight project deadlines. They frequently troubleshoot issues that arise from hardware-software communication or performance bottlenecks in large-scale test sequences. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as hardware engineers and quality assurance, is key to overcoming these challenges and delivering robust automated test solutions.

Job description

Exowatt is revolutionizing the energy landscape for the AI era with our groundbreaking P3 system that captures solar energy, stores it as heat, and generates electricity on demand. Founded in 2023 and backed by leading investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Sam Altman, and Felicis, weโ€™re committed to providing clean, modular, and scalable power that meets the rapidly growing demands of AI infrastructure. Our mission is to make sustainable renewable energy always available and almost free, enabling technological advancement while protecting our planet.

Weโ€™re hiring a Test Engineer to own day-to-day operation of the solar simulator and lead the characterization and validation testing that feeds directly into our product development. This is a handsโ€‘on role for someone who likes working with real hardware, highโ€‘flux optics, and highโ€‘temperature systemsโ€”and who gets energized by the fact that the data they generate actually drives design decisions.

This position is based in Miami, FL. If selected, relocation to Miami, FL is required. Exowatt provides relocation assistance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, set up, and execute test campaigns on the solar simulator, including thermal receiver characterization, material testing, and sub-system validation.
  • Design and build test fixtures, instrumentation setups, and data acquisition systems to capture high-quality experimental data.
  • Operate and maintain the simulator and supporting lab infrastructureโ€”lamp arrays, optics, cooling, controls, and safety systems.
  • Perform flux mapping, spectral characterization, and calibration to ensure test conditions are wellโ€‘understood and repeatable.
  • Instrument test articles with thermocouples, pyrometers, flow meters, flux sensors, and related diagnostics.
  • Develop data acquisition and control scripts (LabVIEW, Python, or similar) and automate repetitive test sequences.
  • Analyze test data, identify anomalies, and communicate results clearly to R&D, engineering, and leadership stakeholders.
  • Partner closely with design engineers to translate test findings into design improvements.
  • Write test plans, procedures, and reports; maintain rigorous records of configurations, calibrations, and results.
  • Enforce and continuously improve lab safety practices for highโ€‘flux, highโ€‘temperature, and highโ€‘voltage work.
  • Support troubleshooting and rootโ€‘cause investigations on prototype hardware.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, or a related engineering field.
  • 3+ years of handsโ€‘on test engineering experience in a lab or prototype environment.
  • Experience designing and executing test plans, including instrumentation selection and test fixture design.
  • Proficiency with data acquisition tools (LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, or similar) and common lab instrumentation.
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer, thermodynamics, or thermalโ€‘fluid systems.
  • Comfort working with highโ€‘temperature, highโ€‘voltage, or otherwise hazardous equipment, and a demonstrated safetyโ€‘first mindset.
  • Clear technical writing and the ability to communicate findings to technical and nonโ€‘technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with solar simulators, highโ€‘flux testing, or other highโ€‘intensity optical systems.
  • Familiarity with thermal receivers, heat exchangers, or highโ€‘temperature storage materials.
  • Experience calibrating optical or thermal instrumentation (pyrometers, flux gauges, radiometers).
  • Background in mechanical fabrication, machining, or handsโ€‘on prototype assembly.
  • Previous work in a fastโ€‘moving hardware startup environment.
What We Offer

Competitive salary and equity options.

Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and retirement plans.

A dynamic work environment that fosters creativity and innovation.

Opportunities for professional growth and development in a rapidly evolving industry.

Relocation assistance.
