Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.

About TeraWave

Blue Origin is building TeraWave, a next-generation satellite constellation designed to provide high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity across the globe. TeraWave's end-to-end network spans user terminals, satellites and the optical inter-satellite link mesh, gateways, Points of Presence, and supporting ground and operational infrastructure.

About This Role

As a Senior Software Development Engineer within the TeraWave Network Software organization, you will design and build routing and control-plane software for a global satellite network with a continuously changing topology. Available links and optimal paths change as satellites move, links are established or released, demand shifts, and network elements experience failures or degraded operating conditions. You will develop software that models current and future network connectivity, computes traffic-engineered paths, programs forwarding behavior, and maintains connectivity through planned topology transitions and unplanned failures.

This role is based in Seattle, WA, or Cupertino, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, and operate routing control-plane software for satellite, gateway, and terrestrial networks.

  • Develop topology models for current and predicted connectivity across satellites, optical links, gateways, and Points of Presence.

  • Implement path-computation algorithms that account for latency, capacity, availability, congestion, policy, and resource constraints.

  • Translate network intent and computed paths into forwarding state on network elements.

  • Develop routing behavior for topology transitions, link changes, node movement, degraded links, and failures.

  • Integrate telemetry, topology, link-state, and network-condition data into route computation and control systems.

  • Develop simulation, emulation, and test capabilities for routing correctness, convergence, scalability, resiliency, and performance.

  • Diagnose routing and forwarding issues across the control plane, data plane, and physical topology.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field.

  • 5 or more years of professional software development experience in technical domains.

  • Experience developing software for networking, distributed systems, infrastructure, or embedded systems.

  • Experience with IP routing, packet forwarding, convergence, failure recovery, or traffic engineering.

  • Experience developing production software in C++, Rust, Go, Java, or Python.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Operations Research, or related field.
  • Experience implementing routing protocols, SDN controllers, path-computation systems, or network-management software.
  • Experience with satellite, aerospace, mobile ad hoc, wireless mesh, or optical networks.
  • Experience with centralized route computation, distributed routing, fast reroute, or local protection mechanisms.
  • Experience modeling or routing across time-varying or predicted network topologies.
  • Knowledge of IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, Segment Routing, PCEP, TI-LFA, or ECMP.
  • Experience programming forwarding behavior on network processors, switching ASICs, embedded systems, or programmable data planes.

Base Pay Range for:

CA applicants is $248,830.00 - $348,361.65 WA applicants is $248,830.00 - $348,361.65
