What are the typical duties of a senior janitor?

A Senior Janitor is responsible for overseeing cleaning and maintenance tasks in large facilities such as schools, offices, or hospitals. Their duties include supervising a team of janitors, coordinating cleaning schedules, inspecting work to ensure standards are met, ordering cleaning supplies, and sometimes handling minor repairs. They often serve as the main point of contact between the cleaning staff and building management. Senior Janitors play a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior janitor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Janitor, you need expertise in cleaning techniques, facility maintenance, and safety protocols, often supported by experience or relevant certifications in custodial work. Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is typically required. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and leadership skills help you manage tasks efficiently and supervise junior staff. These skills are critical for maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment while ensuring operations run smoothly.

What opportunities for advancement are available for senior janitors within facilities management teams?
