Senior Isr Systems Engineer information

What is a Senior ISR Systems Engineer?

Senior ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) Systems Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and manage complex ISR systems used for gathering and analyzing data in defense, security, and intelligence applications. They work on integrating sensors, communication networks, and data analysis tools to ensure effective real-time information collection and dissemination. Their responsibilities often include overseeing system architecture, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Senior ISR Systems Engineers also mentor junior staff and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver mission-critical solutions. Their expertise is crucial for maintaining the operational effectiveness and security of ISR platforms.

How does a Senior ISR Systems Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the development of intelligence systems?

Senior ISR Systems Engineers frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and intelligence analysts to ensure that system requirements are clearly defined and that solutions are effectively integrated. They often serve as technical leaders, translating operational needs into technical specifications and facilitating communication across disciplines. Regular team meetings, design reviews, and integration testing sessions are common, enabling engineers to coordinate efforts and address challenges early in the development cycle. This collaborative environment supports innovation and ensures that complex ISR systems meet mission-critical objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior ISR Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior ISR Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering, signal processing, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) technologies, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools, requirements management systems, and certifications like INCOSE CSEP are often expected. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and clear communication skills help in managing complex projects and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure effective design, integration, and delivery of ISR solutions critical to mission success.

What is the difference between Senior Isr Systems Engineer vs Network Systems Engineer?

AspectSenior Isr Systems EngineerNetwork Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Security Certifications (e.g., CISSP), and specialized ISR trainingBachelor's in Computer Science or related, Cisco/Juniper certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP)
Work EnvironmentDefense, aerospace, military, and government projects focused on ISR systemsCorporate, telecom, or enterprise networks in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in defense and government sectorsCommercial and enterprise sectors

The Senior Isr Systems Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems primarily for defense and government agencies. In contrast, a Network Systems Engineer focuses on designing and managing network infrastructure for commercial organizations. While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications, the Senior Isr Systems Engineer emphasizes security, sensor integration, and military applications, making it distinct in scope and environment.

Job description

SPACE SYSTEMS

At Rocket Lab, we're not just launching rockets - we're building the future of space. Our Space Systems team builds everything from complete spacecraft, precision payloads to the components and subsystems that allow them to thrive in space, like solar panels, flight software, star trackers, optical systems, separation systems, radios, and more.

Our Space Systems team has enabled more than 1,700 missions, ranging from interplanetary exploration, in-space manufacturing to national security and defense initiatives. The team has built spacecraft, payloads, and components for missions to the Moon and Mars, working with partners including NASA, the Space Development Agency, and the U.S. Space Force. Whether it's a single high-performance spacecraft, constellation, or the vertically integrated components that help them get to space - our world class Space Systems team is empowering some of the boldest and most ambitious space missions.

SENIOR SYSTEMS ENGINEER I/II - SECRET CLEARANCE

Rocket Lab's Optical Systems division solves mission-critical space domain and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) challenges for Department of Defense (DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) customers. Our vision is to revolutionize the space-based payload market with innovative and novel designs for space, terrestrial, and airborne environments. Building on more than 20 years of electro-optical and infrared systems innovation from Geost, Optical Systems delivers solutions to the warfighter for responsive, scalable sensing solutions across all orbital domains.

As a Senior Systems Engineer based at our Optical Systems site in Tucson, AZ, you will have the opportunity to design, develop, and test space-based electro-optical sensors. Systems engineers are responsible for the development and maintenance of technical budgets, requirements definition, test planning and execution, and overall management of the systems engineering process. They also work hands-on with flight hardware, and drive the technical development of our Space Systems missions.
