What is a senior interoperability engineer?

A Senior Interoperability Engineer is a specialized professional who ensures that different software systems, applications, or devices can effectively communicate and work together. They design, implement, and maintain integration solutions, often in complex environments such as healthcare, finance, or enterprise IT. This role typically involves working with APIs, data standards, and protocols to facilitate seamless data exchange between systems. Senior Interoperability Engineers also troubleshoot integration issues, ensure compliance with industry standards, and may lead or mentor junior engineers. Their expertise helps organizations maximize operational efficiency by eliminating data silos and improving system connectivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior interoperability engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Interoperability Engineer, you need expertise in healthcare data standards (such as HL7, FHIR, and CDA), system integration, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Job description

About Virtru: While the rest of the security industry obsesses over locking data down to prevent it from being lost or stolen, we're doing something fundamentally different at Virtru. We're setting data free so that you can intentionally share it with others, but without sacrificing security, privacy, or control. We've created both a suite of powerful data protection applications and an open platform that's sparking an ecosystem of innovation. Through the Trusted Data Format (TDF) open standard, we're not just protecting data; we're creating a new paradigm where security enables sharing rather than preventing it. Think of us as the Android of data protection: a robust platform with an open core that developers and partners can build upon, coupled with our own best-in-class applications that showcase what's possible when you reimagine security from the ground up. Backed by Iconiq Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, Foundry Capital, and Tiger Global, we're helping Fortune 500 companies and government agencies discover that true data security means having the freedom to share, collaborate, and innovate - without compromise. Team & Position Details: We are looking for a Platform Product Manager to lead the product lifecycle for Virtru's flagship Data Security Platform. You'll work at the intersection of customer needs, developer experience, and technical innovation-helping our platform serve both on-premises and cloud-hosted deployment models while enabling seamless interoperability with specialized security solutions. Your focus will be on working with partners and potential customers who are implementing the Virtru Data Security Platform. You'll own the roadmap across all deployment modes, shape the developer experience for those building on the platform, and define how Virtru interoperates with the enterprise solutions customers already use. As a Sr. Product Manager, your responsibilities will include: * Platform Vision & Roadmap Development: Define and execute the Data Security Platform Vision, balancing customer needs, partner requirements, developer experience, and technical feasibility. Contribute to strategic priorities and roadmap development with a focus on multi-deployment models (on-premises, cloud-hosted, and hybrid) and ecosystem interoperability. * Developer Experience Focus: Champion the developer community by understanding their needs and pain points when building on or integrating with the platform. Refine APIs, integrations, and documentation requirements that make the Data Security Platform a powerful, accessible foundation for building data protection solutions. Collaborate with engineering to ensure excellent developer tooling and resources. * Customer & Partner Research: Engage deeply with developers to understand workflows, compliance requirements, security challenges, and use cases. Conduct customer interviews, analyze usage data, and synthesize feedback from diverse stakeholders to inform product decisions. * Ecosystem & Interoperability Strategy: Lead product thinking around the platform's ability to interoperate with specialized security solutions-including external Key management systems (KMS), content extraction tools, tagging solutions, and other enterprise security infrastructure. Identify and prioritize integration opportunities that amplify platform value. Skills that will help you thrive in this role: * Bachelor's Degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience * Product Management Experience: 3-7 years of product management in enterprise B2B, with a strong preference for experience in enterprise security, data protection, or data-centric solutions. * Enterprise Software Expertise: Deep understanding of enterprise software development, deployment models, and the complexity of on-premises vs. cloud-hosted solutions. Familiarity with hybrid architectures and enterprise IT decision-making processes. * Technical Acumen: Ability to understand and communicate complex technical concepts. Comfortable discussing APIs, SDKs, integrations, system architecture, and developer tooling without requiring hands-on coding experience. Willingness to dive deep into technical documentation and specifications. * Security Domain Knowledge: Solid foundational knowledge of data security, privacy, and encryption concepts. Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, CMMC and ITAR. * Analytical & Lateral Thinking: Strong analytical skills combined with the ability to map concepts and solutions across industries, verticals, and use cases. Comfortable synthesizing information from diverse sources and finding creative connections between customer needs and platform capabilities. * Communication Excellence: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills across technical, business, and executive audiences. * Intellectual Curiosity: Demonstrated ability and genuine eagerness to learn and understand new concepts, especially in security, compliance, and enterprise environments. Comfort with ambiguity and a growth mindset.
Additional Preferred Qualifications * Previous experience building products for large enterprises with strict compliance requirements * Familiarity with Key management systems (KMS), content discovery, or data classification solutions * Experience with developer-focused products, platform-as-a-service offerings and SDKs * Understanding of enterprise data governance and regulatory compliance frameworks * Exposure to cryptography, encryption standards, or data protection technologies * Experience with agile development methodologies and product management frameworks
Virtruvian qualities that will set you up for success: * Thinking outside of the box to respectfully challenge your teammates and managers in the pursuit of excellence * Strong sense of urgency with an action-oriented mindset * Able to collaborate and adapt to shifting priorities as business needs evolve * Comfortable with asynchronous communication including slack, email, zoom, etc.
Compensation, Benefits & Perks: Compensation: $165,000- $200,000/year Offered compensation will be determined based on a range of factors, including the candidate's relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, internal equity, and geographic location, and is carefully benchmarked against industry standards to ensure fair and competitive compensation. At Virtru, we believe people do their best work when their wellbeing is put first. This is why we make your wellbeing our priority with a thoughtful and holistic program that encompasses Occupational, Mental, Social, Physical, and Environmental Wellness by offering benefits such as... * A Flexible PTO policy - we strongly encourage you to take time off (in addition to 14 holidays) to ensure that you are getting the proper time needed to unplug and recharge. * A $1,500 annual Learning & Development Stipend focused on providing you the resources to continually learn and professionally grow. * Frequent company-sponsored team celebrations that provide ample opportunities to connect with teammates and be social! * Access to an Employee Assistance Program * Access to Headspace, a mental health app tailored to your specific needs. * A flat 3% contribution to your retirement account * A high degree of flexibility - Have an appointment, errand, or family emergency to take care of? Hop to it! We give you the time and space to take care of you and your own first.
In addition to wellbeing, Virtru places a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our DB&I Council is dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace and making the psychological safety of each and every one of our teammates a top priority. Additional perks include: * Competitive compensation * Generous parental, medical, and bereavement policies * Uncapped commissions for Sales roles * 401K contribution and stock options * Full medical, dental, and vision benefits * New Hire Swag and IT Welcome boxes * Structured semi-annual 360° performance reviews
