Job Description
AECOM's Chicago Buildings + Places team is seeking a talented and motivated Senior Interior Designer to lead the design and execution of interior design projects across multiple typologies. The Senior Interior Designer is responsible for setting the strategic direction, creative vision, and technical excellence of interior design projects. This role combines design leadership, and client engagement, while ensuring projects are delivered with design quality, financial discipline, and operational efficiency. This role is a hybrid position located in Chicago, IL.

About the Chicago Buildings + Places Team
Our practice is one of the fastest growing and highest-performing B+P practices in AECOM's West Region. We offer a full suite of services: architecture, interiors, building systems and structural engineering, urbanism and planning (including landscape), workplace transformation, advisory services, technology solutions, and digital delivery - and serve as a Center of Excellence for many of these disciplines.

What You'll Do
In partnership with the Desing Director, the Senior Interior Designer serves as a trusted advisor to clients and a mentor to design teams, elevating the firm's brand, culture and market presence. This role balances hands-on design leadership with client engagement and mentorship, elevating design excellence and supporting project needs, profitability, and long-term client relationships in alignment with regional and national objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Vision
  • Lead concept development and design excellence across multiple project types and scales
  • Ensure consistency in quality, innovation, sustainability, and technical rigor
  • Review and guide major project milestones from concept through construction

Client Leadership & Business Development
  • Serve as a trusted client partner, translating vision and goals into clear, actionable design strategies
  • Present design concepts and solutions, incorporating client feedback through design development
  • Maintain strong client relationships that drive repeat work and referrals
  • Strengthen AECOM's presence in the design community through relationships with clients, consultants, and industry partners

Project Oversight & Delivery
  • Provide design oversight for multiple projects, ensuring scope, schedule, and budget adherence
  • Generate design documentation, including concepts, renderings, material selections, and technical drawings
  • Collaborate with project managers to manage risk, staffing, and resourcing
  • Resolve complex design, technical, or delivery challenges

Team Leadership & Talent Development
  • Mentor, and inspire members of a multidisciplinary interior design team
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performance culture
  • Promote continuous learning, innovation, and emerging design trends

The following characteristics/experience are essential to the success of this position:
Proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Powerpoint, and rendering tools like V-Ray or Enscape.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or interior design + minimum 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Powerpoint, and rendering tools like V-Ray or Enscape.
  • 15+ years of experience in commercial interiors
  • Professional licensure in field of study
  • Experience across a range of project sizes and typologies
  • High attention to detail with a strong sense of design craft
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and accountable
  • General Understanding of building codes, regulations, and construction processes.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable balancing creativity with technical and practical constraints
  • Experience with Change Management
  • LEED Accreditation
  • Valid driver's license
