What does a senior instrument engineer do?

A Senior Instrument Engineer is responsible for designing, specifying, installing, and maintaining instrumentation and control systems used in industrial processes. They ensure that these systems function efficiently, safely, and reliably to monitor and control variables such as pressure, temperature, and flow. Senior Instrument Engineers often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. They also collaborate with other engineering disciplines to optimize process performance and comply with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior instrument engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Instrument Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering (often electrical, instrumentation, or control engineering) and extensive experience with instrumentation design, installation, and maintenance. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as PLCs, DCS, CAD software, and familiarity with relevant codes and certifications like ISA or IEC are essential. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help coordinate teams and interface with other engineering disciplines. These skills and qualities ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of complex industrial processes.

What are some common challenges faced by senior instrument engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Job Description

CIMA+ delivers some of the largest and most technically demanding electrical transmission and distribution projects in Canada. Working alongside major utility and infrastructure owners, our teams support the planning, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of assets that provide safe, reliable power to communities, industries and critical infrastructure.

As our portfolio continues to grow, we are further expanding our integrated Project Delivery team. Quality Assurance plays a critical role in how we deliver complex utility infrastructure reliably, on schedule and within budget. We are looking for experienced professionals who bring sound technical judgment, a practical approach to problem solving and a commitment to providing quality services.

We are seeking a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer – High-Voltage T&D Equipment to support major transmission and distribution projects throughout British Columbia. This role provides independent quality assurance oversight for high-voltage equipment—from supplier qualification and manufacturing through installation, testing and commissioning—to help ensure critical infrastructure is delivered safely, reliably and in accordance with project requirements.

Working closely with engineers, project teams, suppliers and utility clients, you will play a key role in reducing project risk, supporting successful energization and strengthening the quality systems that underpin reliable power delivery.

Ideally the role will be based in our Vancouver, BC office, however other Western Canada office locations, will also be considered for the right candidate.

Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in transmission and distribution high-voltage equipment, preferably 230 kV and above, including manufacturing, supplier quality, installation or commissioning.

  • Lead risk-based quality assurance for high-voltage T&D equipment across procurement, manufacture, delivery, installation and commissioning.

  • Assess equipment quality risks and establish supplier quality requirements, Inspection and Test Plans, hold points, witness points and surveillance activities with equipment engineers and the Professional of Record.

  • Review specifications, procurement documents and supplier quality documentation to confirm requirements for manufacturing, testing, traceability and quality records are complete and proportionate to risk.

  • Evaluate high-voltage equipment suppliers and critical sub-suppliers through quality-system reviews, audits, manufacturing surveillance and source inspection.

  • Inspect equipment during manufacture, receipt and installation to verify materials, workmanship, preservation, assembly and compliance with project requirements.

  • Perform delegated hold-point, witness-point and field-verification activities, documenting findings and escalating non-conformances requiring engineering disposition.

  • Manage non-conformances through commissioning, ensuring deficiencies are documented, technically dispositioned, corrected, verified and closed.

  • Maintain complete and traceable quality records to support turnover, energization and long-term asset history.

  • Provide specialist quality advice for high-voltage T&D equipment and contribute to the development of CIMA+’s equipment-quality capability.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Registered Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC, or eligible for registration in British Columbia.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the manufacture, testing, installation and commissioning of high- and extra-high-voltage T&D equipment.
  • Experience with equipment such as power transformers, instrument transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, reactors, capacitor banks, switchgear and related substation equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of supplier quality, manufacturing surveillance, inspection and testing, non-conformance management and quality records.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, Inspection and Test Plans, procedures, test records, material certificates and applicable CSA, IEEE and IEC standards.
  • Strong analytical, observational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently across supplier, factory and construction environments.
  • Integrity, team spirit, and a commitment to excellence
