Job description

JMT's Virginia Beach Construction Management Team is seeking a Senior Construction Inspector to apply standard inspection procedures to ongoing activities during and after construction for structural quality, general safety and conformance to plans, specifications and codes.
Compensation for this position is $36.00 - $47.00 per hour, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. If so, the actual salary range may vary from the estimate provided.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Review and interpret plans, site layouts, specifications and construction methods to ensure compliance to legal requirements and safety regulations
  • Performs routine tests on concrete, soils and other materials
  • Measure dimensions and verify level, alignment, and elevation of structures, fixtures, grades and/or pavement to ensure compliance to plans and codes
  • Coordinate and supervise project inspection activities to ensure contractor compliance of plans, contract documents, specifications and standards
  • Assign, schedule and maintain subordinate inspection staff throughout all phases of the project
  • Work on behalf of the Client to draft project correspondence, facilitate project meetings, and resolve construction related field issues
  • Gathers and maintains record documents
  • Makes field notes and computations
  • Interact with the general public, government agencies, contractors, sub-contractors, and other internal and external parties to respond to inquiries

  • Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field - ACI Concrete Field Level I, or WACEL Concrete I, or NICET LEVEL II*
  • Pavement Marking
  • GRIT (Guardrail Certification)
  • Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection - Virginia DEQ
  • Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification - Virginia DEQ
  • Nuclear Gauge Safety Training - Nuclear Regulatory Commission Recognized Provider
  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control - VDOT Approved Provider
  • 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training - OSHA

*Beginning in 2013, VDOT Materials Division will no longer be recognizing Mid-Atlantic Regional Technician Certification Program (MARTCP) certifications; current VDOT Letters of Reciprocity will remain valid until the expiration of the MARTCP or state DOT certification that the letter is based on. VDOT Materials Division will start recognizing NICET Level II Certifications in Soils and Concrete.
Additional Required Certifications**
  • Slurry Surfacing (SS)
  • Surface Treatment (ST)

** These certifications, Slurry Surfacing (SS) and Surface Treatment (ST), will be required by the Department at the time of issuing task orders involving such work.
Required Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent (may be substituted for experience)
  • 7+ years of Roadway Construction Inspection Experience

Preferred Experience
  • Associates or bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering
  • Supervisory experience in construction management/inspection situations
  • Ability to act in an Owner's Agent/Responsible in Charge role

Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
