Senior Innovation Scientist information

What is a senior innovation scientist?

A Senior Innovation Scientist is a highly experienced professional who leads research and development activities to create new products, technologies, or processes within an organization. They identify opportunities for innovation, design experiments, analyze data, and guide teams through the development process. Their role often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, staying current with industry trends, and ensuring that new solutions align with the company’s strategic goals. Senior Innovation Scientists also mentor junior scientists and help shape the innovation strategy of their organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior innovation scientist?

To thrive as a Senior Innovation Scientist, you need an advanced degree in a relevant scientific field, extensive research experience, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), data analysis software, and intellectual property processes is often required. Creativity, strategic thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for driving innovation and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully developing novel solutions, advancing R&D initiatives, and maintaining a competitive edge in rapidly evolving industries.

What are some typical challenges faced by a senior innovation scientist when bringing new ideas from concept to implementation?

Senior Innovation Scientists often encounter challenges such as aligning innovative concepts with business goals, securing stakeholder buy-in, and navigating resource constraints. Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams is essential to translate scientific breakthroughs into viable products or processes while managing timelines and regulatory requirements. Adaptability and strong communication skills are crucial for overcoming roadblocks and ensuring that innovation projects progress successfully from the lab to real-world application.

What is the difference between Senior Innovation Scientist vs Innovation Scientist?

AspectSenior Innovation ScientistInnovation Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Science/Engineering, PhD often preferred, with experience in innovation projectsBachelor's or Master's in Science/Engineering, entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, R&D departments, cross-functional teamsResearch teams, product development, innovation labs
Employer & Industry UsageTech, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and R&D-focused companiesSimilar industries, often as entry or mid-level roles in innovation teams

In summary, a Senior Innovation Scientist typically has more experience, leadership responsibilities, and advanced expertise compared to an Innovation Scientist. Both roles work within R&D environments, but the senior position often involves guiding projects and mentoring junior staff.

Job description

Overview

Lynker Corporation is a leading provider of innovative solutions in weather and climate science. With a commitment to excellence and a passion for innovation, Lynker leverages cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise to support the creation and delivery of improved operational weather forecasts. As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Wetlands Scientist to join our growing team.

Mapping wetlands accurately across large areas is hard, and the maps are only as trustworthy as the validation behind them. We are hiring a Senior Wetland Scientist to lead that work, combining wetland science, remote sensing, and cloud-native geospatial computing to produce defensible wetland products across regional to national extents. The role spans model development, large-area production, validation and uncertainty, and technical leadership.

You will sit close to our modeling and geospatial teams, turning wetlands science into methods that run reliably over large areas. The strongest candidates pair wetland and ecological expertise with strong geospatial and coding skills, and are comfortable moving between the underlying science, the data pipeline, and validation of the resulting maps.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Senior Wetlands Scientist will include the following:

  • Mapping at scale: produce, improve, and maintain versioned wetland maps across large regional to national extents.
  • Cloud-native geospatial: build and run mapping and modeling workflows using cloud-native geospatial tools, formats, and storage.
  • Wetland modeling: implement, adapt, and improve existing and new models for wetland potential and for wetland boundary and extent.
  • Data integration: integrate LiDAR-derived elevation, hydrology, imagery, soils, and existing wetland inventories into reproducible modeling pipelines.
  • Validation & QA: design validation against reference data, quantify uncertainty, and quality-control wetland maps for accuracy and consistency.
  • Communication: document methods and results, contribute to reports and proposals, and partner with the Platform, Modeling, and Applications teams that scale and serve your products.
Qualifications

The Senior Wetlands Scientist selected should have the following:

  • Master's or PhD in wetland science, ecology, geography, environmental or earth science, hydrology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Roughly 5+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD plus a few years of relevant work.
  • Demonstrated experience mapping wetlands, land cover, or comparable features at large spatial scale.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native geospatial tooling, formats, and workflows.
  • Experience implementing or adapting geospatial or ecological models (wetland potential, habitat, boundary and extent, or comparable).
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R for geospatial analysis, with sound coding and reproducibility practices.

The Ideal Senior Wetlands Scientist will have the following:

  • Experience with wetland potential or probability modeling and with wetland delineation, boundary, and extent methods.
  • Experience applying machine learning to land-cover or wetland classification.
  • Familiarity with national wetland, hydrography, soils, and elevation datasets, and with remote-sensing inputs.
  • Experience with distributed or parallel processing for large-area geospatial work (e.g., cloud batch, Dask, or Google Earth Engine).
  • A record of scientific publication or successful proposal work.
  • Colorado Front Range presence for periodic in-person collaboration.
