Senior Infrastructure Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing an organization’s core technology infrastructure. This includes servers, networks, cloud environments, and related systems that support business operations. They often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of the infrastructure. In addition to technical expertise, they may mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other departments to align technology with business goals.

What are some common challenges faced by senior infrastructure engineers when supporting large-scale systems?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and reliability of systems, managing complex migrations, and optimizing performance under heavy workloads. Coordinating with development and security teams is essential to implement infrastructure changes without disrupting services. Additionally, staying ahead of evolving technologies and automating routine tasks can be demanding but crucial for efficiency and scalability. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong technical expertise, proactive problem-solving, and effective cross-team communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior infrastructure engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you need deep expertise in network architecture, server management, cloud platforms, and a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator. Job description

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a seasoned Senior Infrastructure Developer to join our App and Web Engineering team. You will build reliable Java applications, APIs, and platform services that simplify how application teams provision, configure, validate, and operate enterprise hosting platforms. This role is ideal for a hands-on developer who writes clean, testable code, understands the operational demands of large-scale server environments, and treats quality, security, maintainability, and production readiness as core engineering responsibilities.

You will lead by example across analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and support. You will create modular Java and Spring Boot services, define automated test strategies with QA partners, enforce code-quality standards in CI/CD, review designs and pull requests, resolve defects, and use production feedback to improve reliability. You will also develop Ansible automation where needed to connect these services with application and web server operations.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise Java applications and Spring Boot services that support application and web server platform capabilities.

  • Build secure, versioned REST APIs for provisioning, configuration, deployment governance, certificate management, validation, and capacity workflows.

  • Apply object-oriented design, SOLID principles, design patterns, exception handling, concurrency, dependency management, and performance engineering to produce reliable and maintainable code.

  • Create comprehensive automated tests using tools such as JUnit, Mockito, REST Assured, and test containers, covering unit, component, integration, API, regression, and negative scenarios.

  • Partner with QA engineers to define acceptance criteria, test plans, test data, environment needs, traceability, release validation, and defect-resolution strategies.

  • Integrate build, test, security, code coverage, static analysis, and deployment controls into CI/CD pipelines using Maven or Gradle and enterprise delivery tooling.

  • Use code reviews, quality metrics, observability, root-cause analysis, and production feedback to prevent defects and continuously improve software reliability.

  • Develop reusable, idempotent Ansible roles and collections to automate server installation, configuration, JVM tuning, certificate operations, patching, compliance, and policy enforcement.

  • Build self-service capabilities that allow development teams to request server instances, deploy applications, configure routing, request certificates, manage JNDI resources, and consume platform metrics.

  • Participate in Agile planning, estimation, demonstrations, retrospectives, technical design reviews, release readiness reviews, and production support.

  • Mentor engineers in Java development, automated testing, secure coding, code review, troubleshooting, and modern software engineering practices.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of Technology Infrastructure Engineering and Solutions experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

  • 4+ years of software engineering experience delivering production Java applications or backend services

  • 4+ years of hands-on development with Core Java and modern Java versions, including object-oriented design, collections, streams, exception handling, concurrency, and common design patterns

  • 4+ years of experience with Spring Boot, Spring Framework, RESTful services, dependency injection, validation, security, and API design

  • Experience with Maven or Gradle, Git-based workflows, pull requests, peer reviews, branching strategies, semantic versioning, and software release management

  • Experience integrating automated tests, code coverage, static analysis, security scanning, and quality gates into CI/CD pipelines

  • Strong understanding of the SDLC, Agile delivery, secure coding, clean-code practices, documentation, observability, debugging, root-cause analysis, and production support

  • 4+ years of experience deploying or supporting application and web servers such as Tomcat, Apache HTTP Server, IBM WebSphere Liberty, or NGINX

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of frontend development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript or TypeScript, and a modern framework such as Angular or React, including integration with REST APIs and basic UI testing

  • Experience with test-driven development, behavior-driven development, contract testing, test data management, service virtualization, and performance or resilience testing

  • Experience with code-quality and security tools such as SonarQube, JaCoCo, Checkstyle, SpotBugs, SAST, dependency scanning, and secrets detection

  • Experience developing Java services that use JPA or Hibernate, relational databases, messaging platforms, caching, and asynchronous processing

  • Experience documenting and testing APIs with OpenAPI or Swagger, Postman, and automated API test frameworks

  • Deep understanding of JVM behavior, memory management, threading, class loading, performance tuning, and application-server internals

  • Experience with Kubernetes or OpenShift, containerized Java workloads, and hybrid cloud platforms

  • Hands-on experience with observability tools and practices, including structured logging, metrics, tracing, dashboards, alerting, and service-level indicators

  • Hands-on experience developing Ansible automation for infrastructure provisioning and configuration using roles, collections, inventories, variables, templates, and Ansible Vault
