Sophisticated Work. In a Great City. Making a Difference.

The State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) manages more than $178 billion in assets, including those of the fully-funded Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). The City of Madison, the state capitol and home of Wisconsin's flagship university, makes regular appearances on lists of best places to live, eat, and play. SWIB offers a modern workspace, hybrid work options, and competitive compensation and benefits.

Serving over 703,000 WRS beneficiaries, SWIB is driven by a clear mission: securing the financial future of those who serve Wisconsin. When you work at SWIB, you know your work matters.

Job Description:

About Our Team:

We believe security should enable the business. We build security into everything we do, prefer automation over manual effort, and create tooling, guardrails, and reusable controls that make the secure path the easiest path. We partner with teams to help them operate securely at high velocity while continuously improving their security posture.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Senior Information Security Engineer to design, implement, and improve security capabilities that protect the organization's people, data, and technology. You will partner with infrastructure, cloud, application, and engineering teams to build security into platforms and processes.

As a senior member of the Information Security team, you will help reduce organizational risk through practical engineering, automation, and reusable security controls. The ideal candidate is a collaborative engineer who builds scalable solutions and enables teams to operate securely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement security capabilities across hybrid cloud and on-premises environments
  • Design and improve detection, vulnerability management, and incident response capabilities
  • Investigate complex security incidents and implement long-term improvements
  • Build automation, tooling, guardrails, and AI-assisted solutions that make secure practices the easy path
  • Build trusted partnerships across teams through collaboration, transparency, and practical security guidance
  • Partner with engineering and business teams to integrate security into platforms, applications, and pipelines
  • Perform security architecture reviews and provide technical guidance on new initiatives
  • Continuously identify opportunities to reduce organizational risk through engineering and automation
  • Develop security-focused technical standards, documentation, and reusable patterns
  • Mentor teammates and promote security engineering best practices

Qualifications:

  • Enablement mindset and attitude - you win when teams win
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • 8+ years of experience in information security, infrastructure engineering, cloud engineering, or related discipline
  • Bachelor's Degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong background in designing and implementing enterprise security solutions
  • Hands-on experience securing hybrid Cloud and on-premises environments (Azure & AWS preferred)
  • Experience designing or implementing security solutions across multiple domains such as cloud, identity, endpoint, network, vulnerability management, or detection engineering
  • Proficiency with PowerShell, Python, or similar scripting languages
  • Experience with automation, Infrastructure as Code, or API-based integrations
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools (such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, or similar technologies)
  • Experience using Git-based workflows
  • Working experience with Agile methodologies
SWIB Offers:
  • Competitive total cash compensation, based on AON (formerly McLagan) industry benchmarks
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Educational and training opportunities
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Challenging work in a professional environment
  • Hybrid work environment
The position requires U.S. work authorization.
Pursuant to our Hybrid Remote Work Policy, all staff have the flexibility to work remotely, but are required to have a weekly presence in our offices, the frequency of which is dependent on their distance from office. Staff are not required to reside locally; however, we offer relocation reimbursement to the Dane County area per our policy.
All SWIB employees are subject to SWIB's Ethics Policy and Personal Trade Approvals Policy. These policies include restrictions on outside business activities and employment and have limits on personal trading. You may request copies of these policies from SWIB's talent acquisition team and any questions can be answered by SWIB's compliance team.
