What is a Senior ICS Cyber Security Engineer?

A Senior ICS (Industrial Control Systems) Cyber Security Engineer is a specialized professional responsible for protecting critical infrastructure systems—such as power plants, manufacturing facilities, and utilities—from cyber threats. They design and implement security measures to safeguard industrial networks, assess vulnerabilities, and respond to security incidents. These engineers often work with both IT and operational technology teams to ensure robust security across all systems. Their expertise helps prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, and disruptions to essential services. The senior designation typically indicates several years of experience and deep technical knowledge in both cybersecurity and industrial control systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior ICS Cyber Security Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior ICS Cyber Security Engineer, you need deep expertise in industrial control systems (ICS), cybersecurity principles, risk management, and typically a relevant degree or certifications like CISSP or GICSP. Familiarity with security assessment tools, intrusion detection systems, SCADA platforms, and network monitoring solutions is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication skills enable effective collaboration and incident response. Mastering these areas ensures robust protection of critical infrastructure, effective threat mitigation, and compliance with regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior ICS Cyber Security Engineers when securing industrial control systems?

Senior ICS Cyber Security Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating modern security measures with legacy control systems that were not originally designed with cybersecurity in mind. Balancing the need for strong security controls with the requirement for high system availability and minimal downtime is also a frequent concern. Additionally, they must coordinate with both IT and OT teams to ensure seamless protection across all layers of infrastructure, which often involves navigating differing priorities and technical languages between departments.

The CCD Survivability Engineer, Senior serves as CACI's senior systems engineering professional responsible for designing, integrating, and sustaining resilient mission systems, communications architectures, and digital capabilities that enable mission continuity during contested, congested, and degraded operational conditions. Reporting directly to the Platform Integration Lead, this position ensures critical mission systems maintain operational effectiveness despite disruptions to communications, positioning, infrastructure, cyber threats, and adversary actions.

The CCD Survivability Engineer works closely with Government stakeholders, systems engineers, communications engineers, cybersecurity specialists, software developers, operational planners, logistics planners, mission partners, and coalition organizations to develop survivable system architectures, evaluate operational vulnerabilities, and implement resilient engineering solutions. This position contributes to successful program execution by improving system availability, operational resilience, and mission assurance throughout the Indo-Pacific theater. Responsibilities: Design and implement resilient systems architectures capable of operating in contested, congested, and degraded (CCD) environments.

Analyze mission systems to identify vulnerabilities affecting communications, data availability, navigation, and operational continuity. Develop survivability strategies supporting logistics, mission support, command and control, training, and operational systems. Integrate redundancy, resiliency, fault tolerance, and alternate communications pathways into enterprise and tactical systems.

Support engineering analyses for degraded GPS/GNSS, denied communications, cyber disruption, electromagnetic interference, and infrastructure degradation scenarios. Conduct survivability assessments, systems engineering analyses, technical risk assessments, and architecture evaluations. Coordinate with cybersecurity, communications, software development, and platform integration teams to implement resilient engineering solutions.

Support technology demonstrations, operational experimentation, mission rehearsals, and contingency exercises validating survivability capabilities.
