Job description

The Senior Technical Writer & Specifications Analyst is a hybrid role responsible for performing technical business analysis-including requirements gathering and data mapping-and translating those requirements into high-quality, developer-facing API specification documentation. This individual owns the complete lifecycle of documentation for our integration and interoperability services, including orders and results services. Working directly with clinical, technical, product, and analysis teams, they will define data specifications, construct mapping sheets, and build clear, user-friendly documentation to help both internal consumer teams and external customers seamlessly integrate with Quest systems. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in healthcare standards (HL7 and FHIR) and a proven background in simplifying complex integration workflows.
Responsibilities
  • Partner with technical, development, and product teams to gather, define, and document technical requirements for new and existing interoperability services.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive, interactive API specification documentation (including schemas, endpoints, headers, and error codes) specifically for orders and results services.
  • Perform detailed data mapping, interface specification design, and clinical data flow analysis (e.g., mapping HL7 segments/fields and FHIR profiles).
  • Develop and maintain technical guides, quick-starts, step-by-step tutorials, and release notes for both internal developers and external customer IT teams.
  • Validate technical specifications by actively testing APIs (using tools like Postman or cURL) and reproducing integration workflows to ensure accurate documentation.
  • Implement and manage a "Docs-as-Code" workflow, utilizing version control and markdown formatting to streamline review cycles and updates.
  • Collaborate during Agile backlog grooming and sprint planning to proactively identify documentation and interface specification needs early in the product lifecycle.
  • Standardize content across integration portals to ensure consistency, clarity, and adherence to both industry interoperability standards and brand style guides.
  • Promote an environment that encourages collaboration, initiative, continuous improvement, learning, and the generation of innovative ideas and solutions.

Qualifications
Required Work Experience:
  • 5 or more years of experience in technical writing, business systems analysis, or integration analysis, with progressive responsibilities in documenting APIs or clinical integrations.
  • 3 or more years of experience in healthcare interoperability, with a focus on electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical data exchange.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience mapping HL7 standards (v2.x, v3) for orders, results, or clinical data.
  • 3 or more years utilizing modern API documentation standards (such as OpenAPI/Swagger) and API development tools (such as Postman).
  • Experience with "Docs-as-Code" workflows and version control systems (e.g., Git, GitHub).

Preferred Work Experience:
  • Experience in healthcare interoperability in a diagnostic lab or clinical lab setting.
  • Deep knowledge of HL7 standards specifically applied to lab workflows (LOINC, SNOMED, and lab-to-EHR resulting).
  • Knowledge of and practical experience with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) profiling and JSON data structures.
  • Experience working in an Agile/SAFe environment.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Proven ability to build lasting, collaborative relationships with cross-functional stakeholders, developers, clinical analysts, and product managers.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to digest highly technical, ambiguous data streams and synthesize them into cohesive, reader-friendly documentation.
  • Decisive, detail-oriented, and action-oriented, yet highly collaborative.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple concurrent projects and documentation release cycles.
  • Impeccable integrity and high ethical standards.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated individual.

Knowledge:
  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards, data structures, and clinical vocabularies (HL7, FHIR, JSON, XML).
  • Knowledge of data-mapping techniques and technical requirements-gathering frameworks.
  • Knowledge of API architecture styles (REST, SOAP) and security standards (OAuth 2.0).

Skills:
  • Exceptional written communication, editing, and content design skills, with an extreme attention to detail.
  • Deep technical proficiency and the ability to interview technical teams to extract crucial product mechanics.
  • Experience with process optimization, structured terminology management, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Strong collaboration and consensus-building skills.

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science, Technical Writing, Health Informatics, Communications, or a related technical field. (Required)
