The Central Regional Design Division (CRD) provides engineering, design, and project development services to District Three (3) and District Six (6) in order to provide the central region of New Mexico with safe transportation services while implementing innovative design. The Central Regional Division also acts as a liaison between Districts, Local Entities, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) providing technical assistance to ensure local government project design plans can be constructed.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

This position is the third level of the Engineering Series, which performs professional engineering work with both standard and varied assignments of a moderate to complex nature representing a significant portion of a large project or an entire project of moderate complexity in accordance with accepted agency practices.

The person in this position independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria and has a general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields. In addition, the person in this position over time uses advanced techniques in the modification or extension of theories and practices to complete job assignments and may work on a major project or several projects of moderate scope with complex features.

How does it get done?
  • Develop project scope with technical staff, design/construction team members, and other organizations as applicable.
  • Conduct field visits to projects during design and construction, and communicate conditions with senior engineers, agencies, communities and consultants as required.
  • Review and evaluate proposals submitted in response to agency Requests for Proposal (RFPs).
  • Initiate consulting service requests with on-call consultants to prepare analysis and design work required for projects issues.
  • Track consultant progress to meet purpose for the design of the project and verify the engineering estimate of construction and design is within the department's budget.
  • Sign and seal with professional engineering seal all final, specific project related contracts, plans and reports.
  • Independently prepare overall comprehensive design review package for permit applications.
  • Review plans, design contracts, construction contracts, and interim and final construction inspections.
Who are the customers?

The general public and governmental and New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) staff.

Ideal Candidate
  • Experience with AutoCADD/Civil 3D;
  • Experience with NMDOT Standard Specifications;
  • Familiarity with the NMDOT project development process.

Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline and three (3) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
  • Employment requires successful completion of pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
  • Business Reference check is required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
