Senior Geospatial Data Engineer information

What is a senior geospatial data engineer?

A Senior Geospatial Data Engineer is a specialized data professional who designs, develops, and maintains systems that process and analyze spatial or geographic data. They work with large geospatial datasets, build data pipelines, and develop scalable solutions for mapping, location intelligence, and spatial analytics. These engineers often collaborate with data scientists, GIS specialists, and software developers to integrate geospatial data into applications and decision-making processes. Their expertise includes working with GIS software, spatial databases, and cloud-based geospatial tools. Senior-level engineers typically also mentor junior staff and help set technical direction for geospatial projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior geospatial data engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Geospatial Data Engineer, you need advanced expertise in geospatial analysis, spatial databases, and programming languages like Python or SQL, often backed by a degree in GIS, computer science, or related fields. Familiarity with GIS platforms (such as ArcGIS or QGIS), cloud computing services, and big data frameworks is typically required, along with relevant certifications in GIS or cloud technologies. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for designing and implementing scalable geospatial solutions that accurately support decision-making and organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges a senior geospatial data engineer faces when integrating diverse data sources?

One common challenge is ensuring data compatibility and consistency across various formats, such as raster, vector, and tabular data, which often originate from different providers or systems. Senior Geospatial Data Engineers must address issues like differing coordinate reference systems, data quality, and incomplete metadata. Collaborating closely with data scientists, GIS analysts, and software developers is crucial to develop robust pipelines and resolve integration issues efficiently. Staying updated with evolving geospatial technologies and standards also plays a key role in overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Senior Geospatial Data Engineer vs Geospatial Data Analyst?

AspectSenior Geospatial Data EngineerGeospatial Data Analyst
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in GIS, Computer Science, or related field; experience with GIS software and programmingBachelor's or Master's in Geography, GIS, or related field; proficiency in GIS tools and data analysis

Employer & Industry UsageTech firms, environmental agencies, urban planning, transportationResearch institutions, government agencies, consulting firms

The Senior Geospatial Data Engineer focuses on building and maintaining geospatial data infrastructure, pipelines, and systems, often requiring programming and data engineering skills. In contrast, the Geospatial Data Analyst primarily interprets and visualizes geospatial data to support decision-making. Both roles require GIS knowledge but differ in technical depth and focus areas.

Job description

Senior Product Manager, Analysis Ready Data Products

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history.

Key Responsibilities
  • As a Senior Product Manager at Planet, you will support the development and go-to-market execution of our Analysis Ready Data (ARD) product suite โ€” including Mosaics, Analysis Ready Planetscope (ARPS), and Fusion. You will collaborate with engineering, design, sales, and customer success teams to plan requirements, track delivery, and help launch products that meet real customer needs.
  • Planet's Analysis Ready Data products โ€” Mosaics, ARPS, and Fusion โ€” are where raw satellite imagery becomes something a customer can actually use to make decisions: tracking deforestation, monitoring crop health, supporting disaster response. This role sits at the intersection of some of Planet's most technically complex products and its most demanding customers. You'll work closely with engineering, solutions, and sales to help customers realize value faster. Expect exposure to the latest technology in geospatial, defense tech, and AI-native products.
  • You will contribute to the product strategy of the Imagery and Platform product group, helping grow a ready to analyze suite of imagery and data products for enterprise customers and internal flagship solutions. This role is an opportunity to build deep product craft and domain expertise in satellite imagery, geospatial analytics, and AI-powered data tools.
  • Product Management at Planet is not a direct supervisory role over engineering teams. To be effective, you must demonstrate a strong commitment to collaboration and to Planetโ€™s cultural values, agile principles, and leadership through influence.
  • This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from our San Francisco or Arlington office 3 days per week.
Requirements
  • 6+ years of experience in product management, technical program management, or a closely related role.
  • Comfort with software development concepts and workflows; experience working directly with engineering teams is a plus.
  • Ability to make decisions that align with Planetโ€™s technical and strategic roadmap as well as Planetโ€™s core values.
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to build alignment across cross-functional teams through clear communication and a collaborative approach.
  • Experience with monitoring-focused EO products.
  • Background in remote sensing science, image processing, or geospatial data analysis.
  • Experience building and scaling core data or imagery products that serve multiple market segments.
  • Experience working closely with technical customers and understanding their imagery and remote sensing use cases.
  • Experience with remote sensing, geospatial data, or satellite imagery.
  • This position requires access to export-controlled information, and as such, employment (or hiring of a contractor) is contingent upon the candidateโ€™s ability to access all applicable export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
  • These offerings are dependent on employment type and geographical location, based upon applicable law or company policy.
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision plans
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with a company contribution
  • Generous Paid Time Off in addition to holidays and company-wide days off
  • 16 Weeks of Paid Parental Leave
  • Wellness Program and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Home Office Reimbursement
  • Monthly Phone and Internet Reimbursement
  • Tuition Reimbursement and access to LinkedIn Learning
  • Equity
  • Commuter Benefits (if local to an office)
