How much do senior geochemist jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average yearly pay for senior geochemist in the United States is $80,287.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $41,500.00 and $103,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How do Senior Geochemists typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during large-scale environmental or mining projects?

Senior Geochemists often work closely with geologists, hydrologists, engineers, and environmental scientists to interpret complex data and develop integrated solutions for project challenges. They play a key role in designing sampling strategies, analyzing chemical data, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as they must present findings, provide technical guidance, and contribute to decision-making processes. This teamwork not only enhances project outcomes but also offers opportunities for professional growth and knowledge sharing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Geochemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Geochemist, you need a deep understanding of geochemical principles, a relevant degree (typically a master's or Ph.D. in geology, geochemistry, or earth sciences), and substantial field and laboratory experience. Expertise in analytical techniques, such as mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence, and proficiency with geochemical modeling software like Geochemist's Workbench, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and effective communication skills help in leading teams and presenting complex data to diverse stakeholders. These competencies ensure accurate data interpretation, effective project execution, and impactful contributions to mineral exploration or environmental assessments.

What does a Senior Geochemist do?

A Senior Geochemist studies the chemical composition and processes of the Earth, often focusing on soil, rock, water, or gas samples to analyze natural resources or environmental conditions. They design and manage geochemical investigations, interpret complex data, and provide expert advice on resource management, contamination, or mineral exploration. Senior Geochemists may also lead project teams, oversee laboratory work, and ensure that projects comply with regulatory requirements. Their work is crucial for industries such as mining, oil and gas, environmental consulting, and government agencies.

Job description

Our client, a biomining startup focused on increasing copper recovery from low-grade sulfide ores via chemical additives. Is in search of a Geochemist SME to join the team in greater Bay Area, CA.

This Role will own mineral geochemistry workflows for copper/iron/sulfur systems, help run lab-to-pilot-scale column/heap experiments and modelling, and support delivering time-sensitive pilot deliverables with external partners.

First 3 months:

  • Complete geochemical characterization for at least two ore types; finish small-scale high-throughput screening of current pilot project sample

6 months:

  • Scale from high-throughput screening system successfully leads to lab-scale experiments

12 months:

  • Successful transfer to pilot scale (larger lab metallurgical columns) with a partner

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead mineral geochemistry characterization of real-world ore samples across lab→pilot scales
  • Specialize in (Cu-Fe-S) with particular focus on speciation
  • Support with running high-throughput screening and lab column experiments; operate across lab and pilot setups
  • Geochemical data analysis and modelling (translate results into process parameters)
  • Liaise with cross-disciplinary internal team (biology, chemistry, process engineers) and external partners/clients; deliver projects on time
  • Own hands-on lab execution with autonomy; prepare materials for pilots and field transfer
  • Develop and apply a broad range of advanced analytical techniques (including ICP-OES, ion chromatography, microwave digestion, etc.)
  • Interact directly with external partners, hydrometallurgy experts, and pilot clients
  • Deliver projects on time in an industrial setting

MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE

  • PhD + 2 years of industry experience or MS + 6 years of industry experience.
  • Minimum 2 years delivering projects in an industrial/delivery setting (real world industry experience vs purely academic environments)real-world
  • Demonstrable mineral geochemistry expertise (geology/ores/mining focus) — non-planetary geochemistry emphasis
  • Technical depth in copper/iron/sulfur systems; sulfur speciation knowledge required
  • Experience with advanced analytical techniques (ICP, ion chromatography, microwave digestion, speciation analysis, etc.)
  • Proficiency with geochemical modelling software (Geochemist's Workbench)
  • Strong cross-disciplinary communication; hands-on, proactive, able to operate autonomously in a small team
  • Ability to work full-time onsite.
