What is a senior game programmer?

Senior Game Programmers are experienced software developers who design, implement, and optimize code for video games. They typically lead programming teams, mentor junior developers, and collaborate closely with artists, designers, and other departments to bring game concepts to life. Their responsibilities often include solving complex technical challenges, ensuring high performance and stability, and making key decisions about game architecture and technology. Senior Game Programmers usually have several years of industry experience and deep knowledge of programming languages such as C++ or C#. They play a crucial role in shipping polished, high-quality games.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior game programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Game Programmer, you need deep expertise in programming languages like C++ or C#, solid knowledge of game development frameworks, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, as well as proficiency in debugging, optimization, and version control systems like Git, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior developers. These skills are crucial to delivering high-quality, performant games while ensuring efficient teamwork and project success.

How does a senior game programmer typically collaborate with other teams during the development cycle?

Senior Game Programmers play a central role in cross-functional collaboration throughout the game development process. They frequently work alongside designers to translate gameplay ideas into functional mechanics, coordinate with artists to ensure asset integration, and partner with QA testers to identify and resolve bugs. About KOMODO

KOMODO is a 100% privately-owned company that has published over 120 games globally. We are now building our first fully in-house title, a competitive PVP action game focused on modernizing the shoot ‘em up genre. Alongside this, we continue to expand Steam Deck sales across Asia, including the introduction of new Steam and other gaming hardware.

Supported by experienced mentors from across the industry, we are building a small and powerful team where every individual has the freedom and creative agency to make a meaningful impact. This is an opportunity to join at an early stage, where your work will directly influence core gameplay, visual identity, and overall player experience.

If you’re looking for a role where your ideas matter, your contributions are visible, and you can help build something from the ground up, KOMODO offers a rare opportunity to do exactly that!

The Opportunity

KOMODO is seeking a Senior Game Networking Engineer to join the team working on Nanos, the codename for a competitive PvP action game currently in development.

In this role, you will lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of the game’s networking architecture. You will ensure that multiplayer systems are responsive, stable, and optimized for fast-paced online PvP gameplay. This includes handling client-server replication, matchmaking, lag compensation, prediction systems, and networking performance optimization.

You will work closely with gameplay engineers and designers to align networking systems with gameplay mechanics and deliver a smooth, high-quality online experience. As a senior member of the team, you will provide technical leadership, define networking standards, and mentor other engineers to help grow the team’s capabilities.

A successful candidate combines deep experience in multiplayer networking with strong Unreal Engine skills, a practical understanding of latency and replication challenges, and the ability to translate design requirements into robust online systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of networking systems for a multiplayer PvP game
  • Develop and maintain client-server replication, lag compensation, matchmaking, and prediction systems
  • Collaborate closely with gameplay engineers and designers to align networking with gameplay and mechanics
  • Optimize network performance and troubleshoot latency, synchronization, and stability issues
  • Define networking standards, best practices, and documentation for the engineering team
  • Mentor junior or mid-level engineers and contribute to technical growth of the team
  • Support early production by helping establish scalable multiplayer architecture

Requirements

Requirements
  • Extensive experience in multiplayer networking for games, ideally PvP or online titles
  • Strong proficiency in Unreal Engine networking, including both C++ and Blueprints
  • Deep understanding of client-server architecture, replication, lag compensation, and prediction
  • Proven ability to lead architecture design and implement robust networking solutions
  • Experience optimizing networking for fast-paced action games
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across disciplines
  • High proficiency in English communication
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience shipping competitive or online multiplayer games
  • Familiarity with cross-platform networking (PC, console, Steam Deck)
  • Knowledge of network security and anti-cheat considerations
  • Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering standards
Tools / Tech Stack
  • Unreal Engine (C++, Blueprints)
  • Git or equivalent version control

Benefits

  • Performance-based Profit Sharing
  • KOMODO Special Holidays ( 5-business day Summer holiday, 7 business Winter holiday, 1-day Birthday holiday, and 1 day Game Launch Day )
  • 15 days PTO
  • Full Medical, Vision, Dental
  • 401(k)
  • Group Life, AD&D
  • Free language learning classes (Japanese, English)
  • Company Events
  • A Steam Deck will be provided to employees for their employment.
  • Free Games and Manga

Some benefits will be available after the completion of the probationary period.
