What is a senior game programmer?

Senior Game Programmers are experienced software developers who design, implement, and optimize code for video games. They typically lead programming teams, mentor junior developers, and collaborate closely with artists, designers, and other departments to bring game concepts to life. Their responsibilities often include solving complex technical challenges, ensuring high performance and stability, and making key decisions about game architecture and technology. Senior Game Programmers usually have several years of industry experience and deep knowledge of programming languages such as C++ or C#. They play a crucial role in shipping polished, high-quality games.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior game programmer?

To thrive as a Senior Game Programmer, you need deep expertise in programming languages like C++ or C#, solid knowledge of game development frameworks, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, as well as proficiency in debugging, optimization, and version control systems like Git, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior developers. These skills are crucial to delivering high-quality, performant games while ensuring efficient teamwork and project success.

How does a senior game programmer typically collaborate with other teams during the development cycle?

Senior Game Programmers play a central role in cross-functional collaboration throughout the game development process. They frequently work alongside designers to translate gameplay ideas into functional mechanics, coordinate with artists to ensure asset integration, and partner with QA testers to identify and resolve bugs. Clear communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the Senior Game Programmer often bridges technical and creative visions, helping to guide less-experienced programmers and align multiple teams towards a shared project goal.

Job Description

In this role, you'll create software that automatically generates 3D environments or objects. Instead of random designs, your software will use real-world data, such as maps or object details, to make these environments look more realistic. The output from your work will be compatible with popular 3D platforms like Unreal and Unity, or as standalone 3D models.

You'll work closely with the Pipeline and AI/ML teams to plan and improve the way this 3D data flows through our production process, helping it fit well with game environments.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Develop procedural generation techniques and software that are compatible with Unreal, Unity, and/or raw mesh output, fed by semantic data about the real world instead of random numbers.
  • Solve technical challenges to balance visual quality, realism, and performance in modern game engines, on commodity hardware.
  • Contribute to the Pipeline and AI/ML teams' design and road mapping process to fine-tune a game environment-compatible data pipeline.
  • Partner closely with leadership to understand the high-level product vision
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3+ years of relevant industry experience for Senior Game Specialist, ideally within a fast-paced, high-growth tech environment, demonstrating a proven track record of success and leadership in the gaming industry.
  • Experience with Houdini, Unreal Engine, Unity, or other similar game engines, including proficiency in developing interactive applications, optimizing performance, and implementing real-time 3D graphics and gameplay features.
  • Extensive experience with procedural generation tools such as Houdini, Unreal Engine's PCG (Procedural Content Generation), and/or Blender is highly preferred.
  • Proficient in C++, with a solid understanding of their respective ecosystems and the ability to leverage these languages for software development, scripting, and automation tasks.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with Houdini, Unreal PCG, and/or Blender procedural generation applications is highly preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for automated development processes and systems.

Fully Remote: This position has been designated as fully remote, meaning that the position is expected to contribute from a non-NBCUniversal worksite, most commonly an employee's residence.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, tuition reimbursement, and a variety of other discounts and perks. Learn more about the benefits offered by NBCUniversal by visiting the Benefits page of the Careers website. Salary range: $130,000 - $155,000.

We are accepting applications for this position on an ongoing basis.
