Job description

Job Description
The Role:
We are building a set of applications that provide end-to-end visibility into GM's systems framework, enabling engineers to understand how functions, requirements, variants, software, hardware, and validation all connect.
This role sits at the intersection of systems engineering and application development. The focus is on making complex system relationships clear, traceable, and usable through well-designed applications and data integrations. These tools will allow engineering teams to navigate system architecture, evaluate coverage, and assess readiness with confidence.
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will lead the development of application capabilities that expose and operationalize the systems framework, while ensuring strong alignment to systems thinking, decomposition, and traceability.
Why This Role Matters:
This role helps define how engineers understand and interact with the systems framework at GM. By connecting systems thinking with usable applications, you will enable teams to make faster, more informed decisions and drive better outcomes across the engineering lifecycle.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
Systems Framework Development
  • Define and model how functions, requirements, variants, and validation artifacts connect within the systems framework.
  • Enable traceability across system decomposition, architecture, and validation layers.
  • Partner with engineering teams to ensure alignment between systems models and implemented applications.

Application Development (Full Stack)
  • Build and enhance React-based applications that visualize system architecture, functional trees, and engineering relationships.
  • Develop backend services using Python (Flask or similar) to expose system data.
  • Create and maintain data integration pipelines that ingest, aggregate, and transform data from engineering systems in alignment with data modeling and architecture best practices.

Systems Visibility & Integration
  • Deliver capabilities that allow users to explore and understand system relationships interactively.
  • Integrate across multiple data sources, including relational, graph, and data platforms.
  • Support a unified view of system status, coverage, and readiness.

Quality Assurance & Testing
  • Implement end-to-end testing frameworks (e.g., pytest, Playwright).
  • Ensure systems and applications are testable, reliable, and maintainable.
  • Establish quality practices across both systems modeling and software implementation.

User Interface & Experience
  • Drive UI design and implementation with a focus on engineering usability.
  • Translate systems complexity into intuitive workflows and visualizations.
  • Build reusable components that scale across systems-focused applications.

Technical Leadership
  • Lead best practices across systems modeling, application architecture, and testing.
  • Mentor engineers on systems thinking, decomposition, and traceability.
  • Collaborate across organizations to align on systems framework standards and tooling.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, software engineering, or related.
  • Experience with Javascript/Typescript, primarily React applications.
  • Experience with Python, with bonus using Flask for web application backend.
  • Experience with end-to-end web application testing (e.g., pytest, Playwright).
  • Experience working with complex systems, data models, or engineering workflows.
  • Strong ability to bridge systems thinking and software implementation.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills):
  • Experience with Databricks or similar data platforms.
  • Experience with Neo4j or other graph databases, or working with non-relational data models.
  • Background in systems engineering, MBSE, or functional decomposition.
  • Experience connecting applications to complex system/data models.
  • Experience in quality assurance strategy and test automation frameworks.
  • Strong experience in user interface design and implementation
  • Exposure to automotive or large-scale engineering systems.
