What is a senior frontend engineer?

Senior Frontend Engineers are highly experienced software developers who specialize in building and maintaining the user-facing parts of web applications. They are responsible for translating design mockups into functional, interactive user interfaces using technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular. In addition to coding, they often mentor junior engineers, make architectural decisions, and ensure best practices for performance, accessibility, and maintainability. Their role is crucial in delivering seamless, responsive, and visually appealing digital experiences.

How does a senior frontend engineer typically collaborate with designers and backend developers?

As a Senior Frontend Engineer, you’ll work closely with UX/UI designers to translate visual concepts into interactive, responsive web interfaces. Regular communication with backend developers is essential to define API contracts, discuss data requirements, and ensure seamless integration between the frontend and backend. Collaboration often happens through agile ceremonies, design reviews, and code walkthroughs, fostering a team environment where feedback and shared ownership drive project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior frontend engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Frontend Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue, along with a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), build tools (Webpack, Babel), and testing frameworks (Jest, Cypress), as well as experience with RESTful APIs, are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, effective communication, and mentorship skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable, maintainable interfaces and for collaborating productively with cross-functional teams in dynamic development environments.

Job description

Description
About the Role:
You will lead the development and evolution of our frontend platform, driving both team execution and the broader technical direction of the UI across the product. This role combines hands-on engineering with team leadership and org-wide influence.
You'll be responsible for delivering high-quality, performant, and accessible user experiences at scale, while partnering with UI leadership to define and execute initiatives spanning design systems, application performance, and frontend architecture. You care deeply about UI quality and craftsmanship, holding a high bar for usability, performance, and visual polish, and bring strong opinions on what makes a great user experience.
What You'll Work On:
  • Leading a team of frontend engineers, owning delivery, execution quality, and technical direction
  • Owning complex frontend systems and features end-to-end, from design through long-term production health
  • Driving org-wide initiatives across design systems, application performance, and frontend technical standards
  • Defining and evolving frontend architecture to support scalability, reliability, and rapid product iteration
  • Establishing and enforcing high standards for code quality, testing, and maintainability
  • Identifying and resolving systemic performance and reliability issues in production
  • Building and scaling interactive, data-heavy applications and AI-driven workflows
  • Partnering with design, backend, and AI/ML teams to shape product direction and user experience
  • Guiding long-term UI technical strategy and key architectural decisions across teams
Level Expectations:
  • Operate as a technical leader for frontend across the team and contribute at the org level
  • Own outcomes, not just implementation, including system health, performance, and developer productivity
  • Drive large, ambiguous initiatives with cross-team dependencies and no predefined solutions
  • Set direction for frontend architecture and influence decisions beyond your immediate team
  • Build and maintain scalable systems that other engineers and teams depend on
  • Raise the bar for engineering quality, performance, and accessibility across the organization
  • Mentor and develop engineers, including setting standards and holding the team accountable
  • Proactively identify gaps in the frontend platform and lead efforts to address them
Must-have:
  • Expertise in React and TypeScript, including architectural decision-making at scale
  • Proven experience leading frontend teams or acting as a technical lead on complex systems
  • Track record of owning and delivering large-scale, production-critical frontend systems
  • Experience driving cross-team or org-level initiatives (e.g., design systems, platform work, performance improvements)
  • Strong understanding of frontend architecture, performance tradeoffs, and scalability challenges
  • Experience integrating complex systems via GraphQL and/or REST APIs
  • Exceptional debugging skills across browser, performance, and production environments
  • Demonstrated ownership of codebase health, system reliability, and engineering standards
  • Ability to operate independently and drive clarity in ambiguous problem spaces
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions across teams
Nice to have:
  • Experience with Next.js or similar frameworks in production at scale
  • Experience working in monorepos and large shared codebases
  • Experience building AI-powered or data-intensive products
  • Familiarity with frontend observability and performance tooling
  • Strong product sense and ability to balance technical and user experience tradeoffs

What We Offer:
  • Enjoy comprehensive paid time off that allows you to have an enhanced work-life balance
  • Excellent medical, dental, and vision options
  • 401(k) matching, life insurance, commuter benefits, and parental leave plans
  • Complimentary CalmApp subscription for you and your loved ones, because mental wellness matters.
  • Thrive within our inclusive community and seize ongoing professional development opportunities to elevate your career.
