Job description

Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer – Connected Products

Engineer the Connected Ecosystem Behind the HVACR Industry's Leading Tools

Fieldpiece is a privately held, global leader in professional HVACR tools and test instruments. We’re known for developing innovative products that technicians rely on every day—and for investing in our people, our technology, and our future.  Named one of the Best Places to Work in Southern California for four consecutive years, we’re looking for talented people who want to make an impact while growing their careers.

Why This Role

Fieldpiece is building the next generation of connected HVACR tools.

Every new product includes embedded firmware, wireless connectivity, and intelligent software that allows tools, sensors, and mobile applications to communicate as one integrated system.

Today, our products collect data from sensors, perform calculations, and share information through the Job Link® System App. Tomorrow, they'll do even more—coordinating multiple tools, automating workflows, and controlling equipment in the field.

As a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer, you'll write the firmware that makes all of this possible. You'll work across hardware, firmware, wireless communications, and connected products to create features technicians rely on every day.

This position is in our Orange, CA office with an exciting move to Tustin, CA in 2028.  This role follows a hybrid work schedule, with employees typically working onsite three days per week. Additional in-office days may be required from time to time for onboarding, training, team meetings, project collaboration, or other business needs.

What You'll Do

  • Develop embedded firmware for connected HVACR products.
  • Design software for wireless / bluetooth communication between tools, sensors, and mobile applications.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, quality, and product teams to bring new products to market.
  • Integrate sensors, communication protocols, and embedded hardware into reliable production systems.
  • Support products from concept through production and sustaining engineering.
  • Troubleshoot firmware and system-level issues to improve product performance and reliability.

Why This Position Is Different

  • Help shape the future of connected HVACR technology as Fieldpiece expands from connected diagnostics to connected tool control and workflow automation.
  • Create an ecosystem where tools communicate and work together and firmware powers wireless connectivity and intelligent features.
  • Influence products from concept through production and make a visible impact on products customers use every day.

In Your First Year, You'll Likely...

  • Become an expert in the Fieldpiece connected product ecosystem and embedded architecture.
  • Develop firmware for new and existing products that improve communication between connected tools and sensors.
  • Partner across engineering to launch new products.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or similar.
  • 7+ years developing embedded firmware for commercial products.
  • Strong C/C++ programming, RTOS and microcontroller-based systems and wireless communication technologies such as BLE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, UART, SPI, or I2C experience.
  • Experience bringing connected products with wireless connectivity from development through production.
  • Worked on products that integrate with mobile applications.
  • Experience with sensors, data acquisition, or control systems.

Bonus Point If You Have

  • Experience with motor, valve, or actuator control.
  • Experience in HVACR, industrial controls, or professional tools.

Why You'll Enjoy Working at Fieldpiece

  • As a privately held company, we invest for the long term—in our people, our products, and our future. That means we can focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and building lasting careers rather than chasing short-term results.
  • Work alongside talented, collaborative teammates who are passionate about innovation and solving real world problems.
  • Make a meaningful impact in a company where your ideas are heard, your expertise is valued, and your contributions help shape the future of our products and business.

Benefits & Perks

We believe great work starts with supporting our employees. That's why we offer a competitive total rewards package designed to promote your health, financial well-being, work-life balance, and professional growth.

  • Competitive base salary with annual bonus opportunity
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match and immediate vesting
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Hire to Retire philosophy - Individual Development Plans for everyone and a commitment to support career development
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Music program – music rooms in all US offices with onsite guitar, piano, and voice lessons in California (classes can be streamed for other offices)
  • Recognition programs, launch parties and team building events to share successes
