What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the senior FEA engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior FEA Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of finite element analysis principles, mechanical engineering concepts, and typically a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering. Expertise with FEA software such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or NASTRAN, along with proficiency in CAD tools and relevant industry certifications, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings to multidisciplinary teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate simulations, effective collaboration, and innovative solutions in product design and structural analysis projects.

What are some common daily responsibilities for a senior FEA engineer?

A Senior FEA Engineer typically spends their workdays creating and validating finite element models, analyzing simulation results, and preparing detailed technical reports for project teams and stakeholders. You may collaborate closely with design engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to propose optimization solutions or address engineering challenges. Reviewing and mentoring the work of junior engineers and staying current with advancements in simulation tools are also common responsibilities. This role is highly collaborative, with frequent opportunities to influence product design decisions and ensure the structural integrity and performance of engineering solutions.

What is a senior FEA engineer?

A Senior FEA (Finite Element Analysis) Engineer is responsible for performing advanced structural, thermal, and mechanical simulations to evaluate product designs. They use finite element methods to analyze stress, strain, fatigue, and other performance factors, ensuring products meet safety and performance standards. They also collaborate with design, manufacturing, and testing teams to optimize designs and troubleshoot engineering challenges. Strong knowledge of FEA software (such as ANSYS or Abaqus) and industry standards is essential. This role typically requires several years of experience in structural analysis, material behavior, and computational modeling.

Job description

Senior FEA Analyst โ€“ Nuclear Fuel Behavior & Operations About this position Aalo Atomics

Aalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10โ€ฏMWe reactor leveraging cuttingโ€‘edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, weโ€™re rapidly growing as we work to deploy the worldโ€™s first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future.

About the role

We are seeking a highly specialized Senior FEA Analyst to lead the highโ€‘fidelity computational modeling and safety evaluation of nuclear fuel assemblies and core components at Aalo. In this role, you will focus on the extreme multiโ€‘physics environment of the reactor core, analyzing thermoโ€‘mechanical fuel rod behavior, fuelโ€‘cladding evolution, and longโ€‘term degradation mechanisms. You will act as the primary technical authority bridging fuel performance engineering with rigorous regulatory safety margins, directly influencing fuel design optimization for operational reliability and accident tolerance.

What you'll do
  • Multiโ€‘Physics Fuel Modeling: Develop and execute highโ€‘fidelity 2D and 3D finite element models to simulate the coupled thermoโ€‘mechanical behavior of fuel rods, pellets, and cladding under steadyโ€‘state, transient, and accident scenarios (RIA/LOCA).
  • Interface & Interaction Analysis: Conduct detailed evaluations of Pelletโ€‘Cladding Mechanical Interactions (PCMI) and Pelletโ€‘Cladding Thermal Interactions (PCTI), capturing localized stress concentrations, mechanical locking, and cladding strain.
  • Microstructural Performance Integration: Simulate timeโ€‘ and burnupโ€‘dependent fuel phenomena, including fission gas release, fuel swelling, densification, thermal conductivity degradation, and cladding creep/hydriding.
  • Code Application & Customization: Utilize and adapt stateโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘art nuclear fuel performance codes (e.g., BISON, FRAPCON/FRAPTRAN, ENIGMA) alongside commercial solvers to predict fuel lifeโ€‘cycle behavior.
  • V&V and Quality Assurance: Lead rigorous Verification and Validation (V&V) procedures for fuel performance models in strict compliance with ASME NQAโ€‘1 quality standards.
  • Regulatory Technical Support: Compile, review, and authorize formal technical reports and licensing topical reports to defend fuel safety margins before nuclear regulatory authorities (e.g., US NRC).
Qualifications
  • Education: Masterโ€™s or Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a highly relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5โ€“8+ years of experience in computational mechanics, with at least 3 years dedicated specifically to nuclear fuel performance modeling or core materials evaluation.
  • Software & Code Expertise: Advanced proficiency with nuclear fuel burnup and performance codes (specifically BISON or FRAPCON), paired with commercial implicit solvers (Abaqus or ANSYS Mechanical).
Core Competencies
  • Deep understanding of highโ€‘temperature material science, radiation effects on materials (swelling, creep), and fracture mechanics.
  • Proven capability in scripting and code customization (Python, C++, or Fortran) to automate workflows and implement custom material subroutines.
  • Familiarity working within rigid nuclear quality assurance frameworks (NQAโ€‘1).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience modeling advanced technology fuels, such as Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) concepts, doped UOโ‚‚, silicide fuels, or liquid metal/molten salt reactor fuel elements.
  • Active or prior U.S. DOE Qโ€‘Level or DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Strong track record of publishing peerโ€‘reviewed research or presenting technical findings to nuclear regulatory bodies.
Requirements
  • Based in the United States
  • Willing to work onโ€‘site in Austin, TX
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary starting at $125,000
  • Paid Time Off
