Senior Engineering Intern information

What are Senior Engineering Interns?

Senior Engineering Interns are students or recent graduates, often in the later stages of their engineering education, who take on advanced internship roles within engineering teams. They typically possess more experience than entry-level interns and are entrusted with more complex tasks such as assisting with project design, analysis, and sometimes leading smaller sub-projects. Their responsibilities may include conducting research, collaborating with engineers, preparing technical documentation, and contributing to problem-solving efforts. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and prepares interns for full-time engineering positions after graduation.

Is $20 an hour good for an intern?

For a Senior Engineering Intern, $20 an hour is generally considered below average, as internships in engineering often pay between $20 and $30 per hour depending on location and company. Interns with technical skills, such as proficiency in CAD, programming, or data analysis, may expect higher pay, especially in competitive markets. Compensation also depends on the company's size, industry, and whether the internship is paid or unpaid.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineering roles in fields such as software, aerospace, or petroleum engineering can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, often including bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing. These positions typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes specialized certifications or advanced degrees.

Can you still get internships as a senior?

Senior engineering interns are typically students in their final years of education who seek internship opportunities to gain practical experience. While most internships target underclassmen, some companies offer internships for seniors, especially if they are pursuing relevant skills or certifications like CAD, programming, or project management. Availability depends on the company's internship program and the candidate's qualifications.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Senior Engineering Intern expect to handle, and how do they differ from those of entry-level interns?

As a Senior Engineering Intern, you can expect to take on more complex and independent projects than entry-level interns. You'll likely be involved in designing, testing, and implementing solutions, as well as collaborating closely with full-time engineers. Senior interns may also mentor junior interns, participate in code reviews, and contribute to team meetings or project planning sessions. This elevated responsibility not only deepens your technical skills but also provides valuable experience in teamwork and leadership within a professional engineering environment.

What is the highest paying engineering internship?

The highest paying engineering internships are typically offered by large technology and engineering firms such as Google, Facebook, Apple, and major oil and energy companies. These internships often provide competitive stipends that can exceed $8,000 per month, especially in fields like software, electrical, and petroleum engineering, and may require strong technical skills and relevant coursework.

What is the difference between Senior Engineering Intern vs Engineering Intern?

AspectSenior Engineering InternEngineering Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering; some experience or previous internship may be preferredUsually enrolled in an undergraduate engineering program, often in early years
Work EnvironmentHands-on project work, mentorship, and collaboration with engineering teamsLearning-focused tasks, assisting with projects, and gaining industry experience
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech, manufacturing, and engineering firms for advanced internship rolesCommon across various engineering sectors for entry-level internship positions

The main difference between a Senior Engineering Intern and an Engineering Intern lies in experience and responsibilities. Senior Engineering Interns typically have more academic progress or prior experience, allowing them to handle more complex tasks and contribute more independently. Engineering Interns are usually in earlier stages of their education, focusing on learning and supporting ongoing projects. Both roles serve as valuable stepping stones into engineering careers, with the senior role offering greater exposure and responsibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineering Intern, you need a strong grasp of engineering fundamentals, analytical problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in or completion of a relevant engineering program. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and project management systems, along with any relevant certifications, is typically expected. Strong teamwork, effective communication, and initiative are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing meaningfully to engineering projects, adapting quickly, and supporting the team’s success.

Job description

Description:

RAM Aerospace is a leader in aerospace innovation, powering flight and space exploration with precision solenoids, valves, actuators, and position sensing solutions. Since 1975, we've supported missions like the Space Shuttle and continue to deliver mission-critical components for commercial, defense, and satellite systems. Headquartered in St. George, Utah, our advanced manufacturing facility produces the precision solenoids, valves, and actuators that aerospace programs worldwide depend on. Our Valencia facility extends that capability with specialized manufacturing of LVDTs and RVDTs, critical position sensing devices used across a broad range of aerospace and defense applications. As one of Southern Utah's largest employers, we drive economic growth and offer high-skilled careers in engineering and manufacturing. From both facilities, we build the future of aerospace—on time, with excellence, and as a team. Join us to work on groundbreaking technology and help shape the future of flight and space exploration. Your career takes off here!

RAM Aerospace's LVDT Intern program is built for engineering students who want more than a summer project. This is a year-round, part-time position designed to fit alongside your academic schedule, giving you sustained, meaningful exposure to the design, analysis, test, and manufacturing of Linear Variable Differential Transformers, the precision position sensing devices that aerospace and defense systems worldwide depend on. You will work directly alongside experienced engineers and technicians, contributing to real work on real hardware across multiple disciplines. By the time you finish school, you will have built a level of hands-on aerospace engineering experience that very few of your peers can match. If you are an engineering student who is eager to learn, ready to contribute, and looking for a role that grows with you through your academic career, this opportunity was built for you.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design & Engineering Support: Assist RAM engineers in the design and development of LVDT components and assemblies. Support CAD modeling, drawing updates, and design documentation using 3D CAD tools, and contribute to design reviews and engineering analysis tasks as your skills and familiarity with the product grow over time.
  • Analysis & Performance Modeling: Support engineering analysis efforts related to LVDT performance, including electromagnetic behavior, dimensional tolerance reviews, and basic mechanical assessments. Learn to apply analytical tools and methods under the guidance of senior engineers, building a working understanding of how design decisions translate into measurable performance outcomes.
  • Test Support & Data Collection: Assist in the setup, execution, and documentation of LVDT performance and functional testing. Operate test equipment under supervision, collect and log test data accurately, and support the analysis and reporting of test results in a format that informs engineering decisions.
  • Manufacturing & Assembly Support: Work alongside technicians in the assembly of LVDT components and subassemblies, learning proper assembly techniques, workmanship standards, and the attention to detail that precision aerospace hardware demands. Support manufacturing operations in a manner that reinforces RAM's quality and FOD prevention standards at all times.
  • Documentation & Continuous Learning: Maintain accurate records of engineering and assembly activities in accordance with RAM's quality management system requirements. Engage actively with the engineers and technicians around you, ask good questions, take ownership of your development, and bring growing capability and initiative to your work with each passing semester.
Requirements:
  • Legal: Must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal background check and drug screening.
  • ITAR: Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum (due to ITAR requirements).
