What is a senior engineer?

Senior engineers develop and design software programs and applications, but are designated senior because they have more extensive knowledge and years of experience than other engineers on their team. As a senior engineer, you work closely with company managers to ensure the software is created to the required specifications and must troubleshoot issues with applications when they arise. Most senior engineers have mastered a specific set of programming languages, databases, and operating systems.

What is a senior engineer?

A Senior Engineer is an experienced professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex engineering projects. They often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals and industry standards. Senior Engineers are typically experts in their field, possessing advanced problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies. Their role also often involves collaborating across departments, managing timelines, and contributing to strategic planning.

How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

What is the difference between Senior Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

Job description

Overview

Ramos CS, now a part of Colliers Engineering & Design, is actively hiring a Resident Engineer to support construction of the Willow Rock Energy Storage Center (WRESC), a nominal 520-megawatt (MW) gross (500 MW net) advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) facility in Kern County, California, approximately 4 miles north of Rosamond. The Resident Engineer will provide senior-level engineering oversight across the site's four 130 MW power turbine trains, thermal storage systems, air storage cavern, and the associated 19-mile 230kV gen-tie interconnection to Southern California Edison's Whirlwind Substation, serving as the primary technical resource for engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the senior engineering point of contact on-site, responding to design and engineering questions raised by contractors and field staff.
  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and change order requests for technical accuracy and conformance with design intent.
  • Oversee and support Field Engineers and Construction Inspectors, providing technical guidance and quality control direction.
  • Monitor construction progress against design documents, specifications, and project schedule.
  • Attend and lead site meetings, progress meetings, and technical coordination calls as needed.
  • Review and approve engineering documentation, as-built conditions, and field-generated design changes.
  • Identify and help resolve field conditions that require engineering re-design or contract change orders.
  • Promote a Safety First approach across all site activities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Active California Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 10+ years of experience in heavy industrial construction, with demonstrated ability to respond to engineering questions in the field.
  • Strong understanding of design engineering concepts across civil, structural, mechanical, and/or electrical disciplines.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
  • Experience on power generation, energy storage, or other heavy industrial/utility-scale projects.
  • Experience working alongside EPC contractors and multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Availability for regular site visits and meetings - full-time field presence is not required.

Compensation: $160,000 to $185,000 per year (depending on qualifications)
