How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

Job description

Senior Engineer - Geostructural - Mi-Tech Services, Inc.

White Plains, NY

As a full-service engineering, design, and construction services firm, Mi-Tech delivers comprehensive support for utility and infrastructure projects from planning and design through execution. Our multidisciplinary team provides practical, innovative solutions that emphasize cost efficiency, constructability, and long-term value. Founded in 1985, Mi-Tech has built a reputation for excellence in engineering, design, environmental, laboratory, technical, and field services across multiple industries. The 2026 merger with J.D. Hair & Associates further strengthened our capabilities and resources, adding decades of specialized expertise in trenchless, geotechnical, and structural engineering to our core offerings. As a proud member of the Michels Family of Companies, Mi-Tech collaborates with an internationally respected team to deliver integrated, end-to-end engineering, design, and construction solutions that meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

In your role as a senior structural engineer at Mi-Tech, you’ll design a wide variety of temporary and permanent structures associated with the construction of utility, infrastructure and heavy civil projects. Primary job responsibilities include developing calculation submittals, coordinating development of design and shop drawings, and supporting project pursuits and bids through preliminary evaluations and analyses. Additional tasks include mentoring and supporting other engineers, communication and coordination with design and field teams, and providing support to the Principal Engineer with any other assigned duties.

Why Mi-Tech Services Inc.?
  • We are committed to hiring the best people and giving them the best equipment.
  • We are dedicated to improving energy distribution & telecommunication services that serve and improve the communities around us.
  • Our steady, strategic growth revolves around a commitment to quality. If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.
  • We are family owned and operated. We work to see each other succeed, not to increase a stock market valuation.
  • We invest an average of $5,000 per employee on training each year. We want each of our team to learn and grow.
  • We believe everyone is responsible for promoting safety, regardless of job title. We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper.
  • We are a part of the Michels Family of Companies – one of North America’s largest, most diversified energy and infrastructure construction companies.
Why you?
  • You like to surround yourself with dedicated, genuine, value-driven people.
  • You are up to new challenges and opportunities. You like to learn and try new things.
  • You cringe when you hear: “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it.”
  • You like to know your efforts are noticed and appreciated.
  • You believe that individual commitment to a group effort is key to success.
  • You want your work to make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
What It Takes
  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering and have4 to 8 years of experience in the design of temporary works, heavy civil, or infrastructure projects.
  • Masters degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures preferred.
  • Hold an active Professional Engineer license in any state.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Mathcad, AutoCAD, and Finite Element Analysis.
  • Basic knowledge of geotechnical engineering and related structures (foundations, retaining walls, and earth retention systems) is a plus.
  • Previous construction field experience is a plus.
  • Candidate must possess a strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a quickly changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication are required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the Michels Review Team.
