What is a senior engineer?

Senior engineers develop and design software programs and applications, but are designated senior because they have more extensive knowledge and years of experience than other engineers on their team. As a senior engineer, you work closely with company managers to ensure the software is created to the required specifications and must troubleshoot issues with applications when they arise. Most senior engineers have mastered a specific set of programming languages, databases, and operating systems.

What is a senior engineer?

A Senior Engineer is an experienced professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex engineering projects. They often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals and industry standards. Senior Engineers are typically experts in their field, possessing advanced problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies. Their role also often involves collaborating across departments, managing timelines, and contributing to strategic planning.

How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

Job description

About Clark
Clark is building the trust infrastructure for the AI economy.
We're starting with audit and accounting workflows-high-trust environments where reliability, accuracy, and security matter as much as product functionality. Our platform helps firms automate complex workflows, deploy AI safely, and build more efficient operations while maintaining the rigor professional services require.
The Role
We are hiring a Senior Engineer focused on internal projects, tooling, and AI automation.
This role is about using LLMs and software to create leverage inside Clark. You will identify high-friction internal workflows, build tools that make teams faster, automate repetitive work, and help the company scale without adding unnecessary operational complexity.
Why This Role Matters
As Clark grows, internal systems will determine how quickly the company can operate.
The Internal Projects Engineer will use AI to increase leverage across customer success, implementation, sales, recruiting, product, and operations. This person will build the internal tooling that helps Clark move faster, learn faster, and reduce manual work.
What You'll Do
  • Build internal AI tools that increase team productivity
  • Automate repetitive workflows across GTM, CS, implementation, product, and operations
  • Build LLM-powered systems for knowledge management, customer insight, recruiting, support, and internal operations
  • Partner with internal teams to identify bottlenecks and design solutions
  • Integrate internal data sources, documents, Slack, CRM, ticketing, and workflow systems
  • Improve internal reporting and decision-making workflows
  • Build systems that reduce founder and team operational load

Who You Are
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • Experience building internal tools, automation, or AI applications
  • Strong full-stack or backend engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with LLMs, agents, workflow automation, or integrations
  • Strong product sense and user empathy for internal teams
  • Comfortable working across functions and ambiguous problems
  • High ownership and strong communication

Bonus
  • Experience building AI tools for internal operations
  • Experience with Slack, CRM, Linear, knowledge bases, or workflow integrations
  • Experience at a fast-moving startup
  • Experience with business operations, sales operations, customer success systems, or recruiting automation
  • Experience turning messy processes into software
The Environment
  • 5 days a week on-site in NYC - no remote or hybrid
  • Startup hours and pace - this isn't a 9-to-5
  • Flat structure, no hierarchy - everyone ships
  • High ownership - you own outcomes, not just tasks
Benefits
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Wellhub Platinum membership
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Free company dinner every day
