How much do senior engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for senior engineer in New Rochelle, NY is $130,235.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $107,500.00 and $147,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a senior engineer typically mentor junior team members, and what impact does this have on the team's success?

Senior Engineers often play a key role in mentoring junior developers by providing guidance on technical challenges, reviewing code, and sharing best practices. This mentorship helps foster a collaborative environment where less-experienced team members can develop their skills more rapidly. As a result, the entire team benefits from improved code quality, faster problem-solving, and a culture of continuous learning. Senior Engineers also help set standards and encourage professional growth, which contributes to the overall success and cohesion of the engineering team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineer, you need advanced technical expertise in your engineering discipline, a relevant degree, and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with project management software, CAD tools, and compliance with engineering standards or certifications like PE (Professional Engineer) is typically required. Critical thinking, leadership, and effective communication are essential soft skills for mentoring teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualities ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and strong team performance within engineering environments.

What do senior engineers do?

Senior engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex technical projects within their field. They often lead teams, review work for quality, and ensure projects meet technical standards and deadlines, utilizing skills in problem-solving, project management, and technical tools. Their role may also include mentoring junior staff and collaborating with other departments to achieve organizational goals.

What is a senior engineer?

Senior engineers develop and design software programs and applications, but are designated senior because they have more extensive knowledge and years of experience than other engineers on their team. As a senior engineer, you work closely with company managers to ensure the software is created to the required specifications and must troubleshoot issues with applications when they arise. Most senior engineers have mastered a specific set of programming languages, databases, and operating systems.

What is the difference between Senior Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectSenior EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering; often a master's; professional engineering license (PE) preferredBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering; PE license optional but advantageous
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, project management; leadership rolesDesign, analysis, testing, manufacturing
Industry UsageUsed across engineering sectors for experienced professionalsEntry to mid-level engineering roles in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace

Senior Engineers typically have more experience, leadership responsibilities, and advanced credentials compared to Mechanical Engineers. While Mechanical Engineers focus on design and analysis, Senior Engineers often oversee projects and mentor teams, making them suitable for higher-level roles within engineering teams.

What is a senior engineer?

A Senior Engineer is an experienced professional responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing complex engineering projects. They often lead teams, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that technical solutions meet organizational goals and industry standards. Senior Engineers are typically experts in their field, possessing advanced problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of relevant technologies and methodologies. Their role also often involves collaborating across departments, managing timelines, and contributing to strategic planning.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Engineer, Quantum Photonics

Location: Hoboken, NJ

Division: Technology

Department: PIC Engineering

About the Role

QCi designs and manufactures integrated quantum photonic devices on thin-film lithium niobate and related nonlinear platforms. We are hiring a Senior Engineer, Quantum Photonics to own the design, process development, and characterization of nonlinear and quantum photonic components — taking devices from concept through wafer-level fabrication and quantum-level validation. You will work at the intersection of nonlinear materials, photonic device design, and quantum optical measurement, partnering closely with our fabrication, packaging, and systems teams to move devices from the lab into scalable production.

Key Responsibilities

• Design nonlinear and quantum photonic devices — nonlinear waveguides and resonators, filters, couplers, and modulators — supported by mode, dispersion, and phase-matching simulation.

• Develop and optimize fabrication processes for nonlinear optical materials at both die level and wafer level, with emphasis on scaling wafer-level processes for repeatable, high-yield manufacturing.

• Lead device characterization: propagation loss, resonator quality factor, dispersion, and nonlinear process efficiency.

• Design and run quantum optical measurements, including single-photon detection (e.g., SNSPD), coincidence and CAR measurements, and Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference to validate source quality and photon indistinguishability.

• Own chip tapeout and mask layout, coordinating design rules with process capability.

• Partner with fabrication, packaging, and systems teams to transfer designs into production and to close the loop between measured performance and design/process changes.

• Document results, define specifications, and mentor junior engineers and researchers.

Required Qualifications

Nonlinear materials, design, and process (die- and wafer-level). Strong background in nonlinear optical materials with hands-on device design and process development, spanning both die-level and wafer-level fabrication — wafer-level process experience is especially valued.

Component design. Deep understanding of nonlinear and quantum photonic device design, including nonlinear waveguides, resonators, and optical filters.

Device characterization. Hands-on experience characterizing photonic devices, including propagation and coupling loss, resonator Q, and nonlinear conversion efficiency.

Quantum measurement. Hands-on experience with quantum optical measurement, such as single-photon detectors and Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference / coincidence measurements.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience with thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN / LNOI) or other nonlinear photonic material platforms.

• Nanofabrication expertise: e-beam lithography, dry etch, PECVD, thin-film deposition (sputter / thermal evaporation), FIB-SEM.

• Fiber-to-chip packaging and active-alignment coupling (e.g., edge couplers, inverse tapers, photonic wire bonding).

• Photonic design and layout tools: Lumerical, COMSOL, KLayout.

• Programming for measurement automation and data analysis: Python, MATLAB.

• Publication or demonstrated track record in integrated quantum photonics or nonlinear photonics.

Education

Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics/Photonics, or a related field — or an M.S. with equivalent hands-on experience in nonlinear/quantum integrated photonics.
