Senior Engineers are experienced team members who support NV5’s national service lines in multiple specialty areas: gas line and facility solutions, electricity transmission, electricity distribution, or civil/structural. Engineers in this role plan and conduct work that requires keen judgement and can devise new approaches to solve design problems and oversee assigned projects. They are increasingly well-versed in leading engineering teams in planning, engineering, design, construction and utility industry consulting on complex projects for local and national clients. Solid written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Engineers at this level are actively involved in the process of bringing in work for the firm. They plan, schedule, and conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work, a project of moderate scope, or in a part of a major project. Senior Engineers perform work that may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. This position requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of related specialties. The Senior Engineer may often serve as a contact for clients, contractors, and other professionals. They may also serve as project leaders and are expected to coordinate the team’s work. Must be able to give direction to less-experienced designers and engineers and assist in staff development.

Responsibilities

As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for representing the firm in interactions with clients, contractors, and other project team members. You will be responsible for designing projects, preparing reports and specifications, and providing a high level of technical competence. Responsible to:

  • Work in teams on the delivery of gas facilities, distribution and transmission lines and liquid facilities and lines and develop technical project documentation
  • Perform engineering and design
  • Design civil and mechanical elements of facilities
  • Specify materials and equipment
  • Calculations for hydraulics and pipe stresses, etc.
  • Interpret and apply requirements
  • Support integrity management programs
  • Screen for and identify integrity threats
  • Support integrity assessment projects (in-line inspections, direct assessments, pressure tests)
  • Perform pipe feature assessments and determine repair methods
  • Be responsive and proactive, managing engineering activities to comply with budgets and schedules; identify departures or issues early to meet client expectations for technical excellence, budget and schedule
  • Perform work that involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment. Will be assigned to project teams and may make major design recommendations
  • Coordinate all design work with other team disciplines
  • Participate in training and mentoring staff as appropriate
  • Utilize relevant software applications, such as Revit, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Electrical Design Suite, MicroStation with Substation or Plant add-in, ETAP or SKM, as well as business operations software including Microsoft Office
  • Design, manage, and assist in production of construction documents, including plans, specifications, and quantity takeoffs
  • Provide quality assurance checks on drawing packages and calculations prepared by others
  • Participate in business development activities including preparation of proposals for new work
  • Develop and maintain client relationships
  • Know relevant local codes and industry standards
  • Analyze and solve construction and operational problems
  • Interpret of field survey data
  • As needed, produce sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks
  • May prepare addendums, proposal requests and change orders; initiate additional service requests and coordinate with project managers for client submittal
  • Participate in technical and professional societies
  • Interpret and apply client, company, and field standards as needed
  • Maintain detailed time and expense records for billing purposes.
Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related engineering field – Civil preferred
  • P.E. license
  • 5+ years of pipeline engineering experience
  • Field engineering experience desired

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Engineering experience desirable in natural gas and hydrocarbon liquids pipeline and facilities design, hydraulics, repair, integrity assessments and fitness-for-service evaluations, risk management, operations, and compliance
  • Understanding of applicable codes and regulations such as 49 CFR Parts 190, 192, and 195, ASME B31.4 and B31.8, API 1110, NACE RP 0102, API 1160, ASME B31.8S
  • Attentive to detail, able to work with a team to ensure quality

  • Self-starter and self-motivator with the ability to perform effectively with minimal supervision, assuming the presence of purpose, autonomy, and relationships.
  • Strategic and curious thinker.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to communicate clearly with other people of diverse backgrounds. Ability to comfortably facilitate meetings.
  • Computer literate and proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite, with high proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Physical Demands:

  • This position requires sitting for extensive periods of time
  • Must be able to visually interpret complex drawings

The pay range for this California position is $95.00- $105.00 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. This information is provided per California Senate Bill 1162. Base pay information is based on market location.
