What is a senior embedded software engineer?

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are not traditional computers, such as automotive control systems, medical devices, or consumer electronics. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware components. Senior engineers typically lead projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to system architecture and design decisions. Their expertise includes programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools specialized for embedded environments.

What is the difference between Senior Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; experience in embedded systemsBachelor's degree in relevant field; entry-level to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing embedded systems for hardware productsDeveloping firmware and software for embedded devices, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as part of product development teams

The main difference between a Senior Embedded Software Engineer and an Embedded Software Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior engineers typically have more expertise, lead projects, and mentor junior staff, while embedded software engineers focus on developing and testing embedded code. Both roles require similar technical skills and industry knowledge, but senior roles involve greater leadership and strategic input.

What are some common challenges senior embedded software engineers face when integrating software with new hardware platforms?

Senior Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring software compatibility with diverse hardware architectures, optimizing for limited memory or processing power, and debugging hardware-software interactions. These engineers must frequently collaborate with hardware teams to resolve timing issues, manage device drivers, and ensure reliable system performance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both hardware constraints and software design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior embedded software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and a strong background in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior engineers. These competencies ensure the creation of robust, efficient, and reliable embedded systems critical for product success.

Job description

About Parloa

Parloa is building the next generation of agentic AI for enterprise customer experience. Our Conversational Platform powers real-time voice and chat AI agents that handle complex, natural conversations at scale for some of the world's largest enterprises. We recently closed a $350M Series D at a $3B valuation, and we're scaling fast — across product, infrastructure, and the global enterprises who trust us with their most sensitive customer interactions.

About the role:

Security at Parloa isn't an afterthought — it's foundational to how we build and operate an AI platform that enterprises trust with sensitive voice and chat data at scale. As Principal Security Engineer, you'll set the technical direction for security across our engineering organisation: from secure architecture and threat modelling, to embedding security thinking into how a fast-growing AI company designs, builds, and ships.

This is a hands‑on, high‑ownership role. You won't just maintain a security programme — you'll define it, working across infrastructure, product, and AI/ML teams to ensure security is built in from the start, not bolted on afterwards. You'll be a technical authority and a multiplier, raising the security bar across the whole organisation.

Areas of ownership:
  • Own the technical security engineering strategy across Parloa's platform, infrastructure, and AI/ML systems
  • Lead deep threat modelling and architecture reviews for new and existing systems, including LLM‑based and voice/chat AI pipelines
  • Drive secure‑by‑design practices into the software development lifecycle, partnering closely with engineering teams rather than gatekeeping after the fact
  • Design and improve detection, monitoring, and incident response capabilities across cloud and AI infrastructure
  • Guide security architecture for multi‑tenant, sensitive data flows across Parloa's enterprise customer base
  • Support compliance and governance efforts (e.g. SOC 2, ISO 27001) by ensuring technical controls are sound and well‑documented
  • Mentor senior+ engineers and security practitioners, building security capability across the wider organisation
  • Act as a trusted technical voice in conversations with enterprise customers and partners on security matters
  • Stay ahead of the evolving threat landscape for AI and voice/chat systems, bringing new risks and mitigations to the team proactively
Who you are:
  • Extensive experience (15+ years) in security engineering, with demonstrated impact at Staff or Principal level
  • Deep expertise in application security and/or cloud security, threat modelling, and secure architecture for distributed, cloud‑native systems
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud security across AWS, GCP, or Azure, and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • Strong understanding of identity and access management, encryption, and secure data handling at enterprise scale
  • Experience securing systems handling sensitive or regulated data, ideally with exposure to GDPR or similar frameworks
  • A track record of driving security strategy and influencing engineering culture across an organisation, not just executing individual fixes
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain security risk and trade‑offs clearly to engineers, leadership, and customers
  • Genuine curiosity about AI systems and a willingness to dig into the emerging security challenges they introduce

* We provide equal opportunities to all qualified applicants regardless race, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, national origin, disability status, socioeconomic background and other characteristics.

Parloa is committed to upholding the highest data protection standards for our clients' and employees' data. All our employees are instrumental in ensuring the utmost care, GDPR, and ISO compliance, including ISO 27001, in handling sensitive information.
