What is a senior embedded software engineer?

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are not traditional computers, such as automotive control systems, medical devices, or consumer electronics. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware components. Senior engineers typically lead projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to system architecture and design decisions. Their expertise includes programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools specialized for embedded environments.

What is the difference between Senior Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; experience in embedded systemsBachelor's degree in relevant field; entry-level to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing embedded systems for hardware productsDeveloping firmware and software for embedded devices, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as part of product development teams

The main difference between a Senior Embedded Software Engineer and an Embedded Software Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior engineers typically have more expertise, lead projects, and mentor junior staff, while embedded software engineers focus on developing and testing embedded code. Both roles require similar technical skills and industry knowledge, but senior roles involve greater leadership and strategic input.

What are some common challenges senior embedded software engineers face when integrating software with new hardware platforms?

Senior Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring software compatibility with diverse hardware architectures, optimizing for limited memory or processing power, and debugging hardware-software interactions. These engineers must frequently collaborate with hardware teams to resolve timing issues, manage device drivers, and ensure reliable system performance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both hardware constraints and software design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior embedded software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and a strong background in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior engineers. These competencies ensure the creation of robust, efficient, and reliable embedded systems critical for product success.

Overview
We are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to support a missile defense program in Huntsville, AL. This role will support the development of next-generation missile defense technology and contribute across the full software engineering lifecycle, including requirements analysis, object-oriented design, coding, unit testing, integration, verification, and support to formal test and delivery.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing embedded C++ software in a structured defense, aerospace, missile, avionics, weapons, or mission-critical environment. This is not a general application development role. Candidates should be comfortable working in environments where software is tightly integrated with system architecture, requirements, UML models, hardware, simulations, testbeds, and real-time execution environments.
Experience with C++, RTOS environments such as VxWorks or Green Hills, Cameo, UML, DOORS, Linux, and full lifecycle software development is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop embedded software in C++ for missile defense or related mission-critical systems.
  • Support the full software engineering lifecycle, including requirements analysis, object-oriented analysis and design, code development, unit testing, integration, verification, and formal test support.
  • Translate system requirements, software requirements, architecture artifacts, UML models, and design documentation into software implementation.
  • Develop software that interfaces with real-time systems, hardware, simulations, testbeds, or target execution environments.
  • Work within a model-based systems engineering environment using Cameo, UML, Rhapsody, or similar tools.
  • Support requirements traceability and verification using tools such as DOORS or similar requirements management platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with systems engineers, software architects, test engineers, integration teams, and other multi-disciplined technical stakeholders.
  • Participate in peer reviews, design reviews, technical reviews, and configuration-controlled development processes.
  • Support software design, architecture, integration, and test activities in accordance with the program Software Development Plan.
  • Develop and troubleshoot software in Linux-based environments as required.
  • Contribute to Agile software development activities in a collaborative, team-based environment.

Required Qualifications
  • Active or Final Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, or another related technical discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • 5+ years professional experience developing software using C or C++.
  • Experience or knowledge of embedded software and hardware environments.
  • Experience with full software lifecycle development, including software design, architecture, integration, and test.
  • Experience developing or designing software to requirements.
  • Experience working in a structured defense, aerospace, missile, avionics, weapons, or mission-critical engineering environment.
  • Experience with Linux development environments.
  • Ability to work effectively with multi-disciplined engineering teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems, especially VxWorks or Green Hills.
  • Experience with software/hardware integration, real-time systems, RTOS, or target hardware environments.
  • Experience with UML-based design or model-based development using Cameo, Rhapsody, or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering.
  • Experience with DOORS or similar requirements management tools.
  • Experience supporting missile defense, interceptors, flight software, fire control, seekers, guidance, navigation and control, command and control, or related defense systems.
  • Experience with Agile software development.
  • Experience with Git, GitLab, CI/CD, unit testing frameworks, or modern software factory practices.
  • Experience supporting formal design reviews such as PDR, CDR, TRR, or related program milestones.
  • Knowledge of safety-critical, flight-critical, or highly regulated development environments.

Work Environment
This position is located at a facility that requires special access. The selected candidate must be able to work 100% onsite in Huntsville, AL and maintain an active Secret clearance.
