What is a senior embedded software engineer?

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are not traditional computers, such as automotive control systems, medical devices, or consumer electronics. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware components. Senior engineers typically lead projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to system architecture and design decisions. Their expertise includes programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools specialized for embedded environments.

What is the difference between Senior Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; experience in embedded systemsBachelor's degree in relevant field; entry-level to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing embedded systems for hardware productsDeveloping firmware and software for embedded devices, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as part of product development teams

The main difference between a Senior Embedded Software Engineer and an Embedded Software Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior engineers typically have more expertise, lead projects, and mentor junior staff, while embedded software engineers focus on developing and testing embedded code. Both roles require similar technical skills and industry knowledge, but senior roles involve greater leadership and strategic input.

What are some common challenges senior embedded software engineers face when integrating software with new hardware platforms?

Senior Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring software compatibility with diverse hardware architectures, optimizing for limited memory or processing power, and debugging hardware-software interactions. These engineers must frequently collaborate with hardware teams to resolve timing issues, manage device drivers, and ensure reliable system performance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both hardware constraints and software design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior embedded software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and a strong background in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior engineers. These competencies ensure the creation of robust, efficient, and reliable embedded systems critical for product success.

With an unwavering commitment to excellence and a proven track record of success, we have established ourselves as a trusted and reliable provider of cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions.
P17 Solutions has an immediate need for a Mid-Senior Adaptation Specialist / Engineer to support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM) Program. The Adaptation Specialist / Engineer provides site-specific configuration, integration, validation, and maintenance support of TFDM capabilities at terminal facilities, while also designing, developing, and maintaining the software tools, automation, and data pipelines that support adaptation and scenario generation. This individual is a subject matter expert responsible for translating operational requirements and local air traffic control procedures into facility-specific configurations (adaptations), and for architecting the technical infrastructure that enables safe, efficient, and tailored deployment of the TFDM system.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring successful deployment and transition of TFDM capabilities into operational use at FAA terminal facilities, while maintaining alignment with national standards and program baselines.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for TFDM adaptation activities at assigned terminal sites.
  • Develop, manage, and validate site-specific TFDM configurations, including gate/stand layouts, surface routing, flight data rules, and alerting parameters/thresholds.
  • Collaborate with Air Traffic Control (ATC), Technical Operations, engineering teams, and other stakeholders to gather and interpret operational data, procedures, and local requirements.
  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of internal scenario generation tools and supporting applications using Java, Python, and Maven.
  • Architect and maintain the TFDM SWIM data pipeline and supporting virtual machine infrastructure, including always-on asynchronous, multithreaded systems.
  • Develop and maintain automation and adaptation tools supporting TFDM initiatives using Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Spring Boot, and Electron.
  • Design and support the enterprise-level TFDM SWIM data integration system utilizing JMS messaging, asynchronous processing architectures, multithreaded Java services, and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Support software installation, configuration, adaptation, acquisition, and operational testing environments for TFDM systems and labs, including rapid application development using a custom stack of Linux, Oracle, Node.js, HTML, and CSS.
  • Use adaptation tools and configuration management systems to input, update, and version-control site adaptations.
  • Coordinate between development, training, and operational teams to ensure successful scenario deployment and testing.
  • Participate in pre-deployment assessments, dry-runs, and readiness reviews to ensure adaptation accuracy and completeness.
  • Support system integration testing (SIT), joint site acceptance testing (JSAT), and operational testing (OT&E) efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise-level architecture, safety, and system engineering standards.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of adaptation-related issues and coordinate resolution strategies with engineering teams.
  • Maintain documentation of adaptation decisions, processes, and version histories for audit and knowledge management purposes.
  • Maintain operational systems supporting TFDM training and adaptation workflows.
  • Provide training, guidance, and technical support on adaptation concepts to local and national stakeholders.

Required Education / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in aviation systems adaptation, air traffic operations, or system integration roles.
