The Role

The Senior Software Engineer is a key member of the R&D Engineering team responsible for supporting software development for connected medical devices across the Avanos portfolio, including Specialty Nutrition products for long- and short-term feeding, RF Ablation systems, and Pain Recovery systems. This role focuses on reviewing and interpreting software deliverables from external development partners, supporting system-level documentation, maintaining internal software knowledge of the product, and ensuring software-related documentation is complete, consistent, and traceable throughout the product lifecycle for new and existing products.

The Senior Software Engineer will work closely with Systems Engineering, Software/Firmware Engineering, Quality, Regulatory, Verification and Validation, and external CDMO partners to support regulated product development, design controls, and Design History File documentation for both new and existing products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead assigned product, subsystem, or component design activities through feasibility, development, verification, validation, design transfer, and commercialization.
  • Interpret, review, and assess software deliverables with CDMOs, external design firms, and other development partners.
  • Develop and maintain system and software documentation, including requirements, architecture descriptions, interface definitions, design descriptions, traceability, and Design History File content.
  • Support requirements management and traceability across system requirements, software requirements, design outputs, risk controls, verification and validation activities.
  • Review software documentation for completeness, consistency, technical accuracy, and alignment with applicable product requirements and development processes.
  • Read and interpret embedded software, firmware, and application-level code to support technical reviews, documentation, troubleshooting, and product knowledge transfer.
  • Support software, system integration, and system-level V&V activities, including review of test protocols, test results, defects, anomalies, and issue resolution.
  • Maintain internal software knowledge of the product, including functionality, architecture, interfaces, dependencies, known limitations, and test coverage.
  • Promote and develop best practices and standards across the software organization
  • Research and evaluate software techniques and technologies against performance requirements for medical device application
  • Support software-related risk management, investigations, design changes, and sustaining engineering activities for commercialized products.
  • Identify documentation gaps, traceability gaps, test coverage gaps, inconsistencies, and technical risks associated with software deliverables.
  • Support design reviews, technical reviews, and cross-functional project meetings by communicating software status, risks, open items, and documentation needs.
  • Support intellectual-property development through design innovation, invention documentation, and technical contributions to patent applications.

Qualifications

Required

Education: Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • 8-10 years of architecture, technical design and software development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results while working on multiple projects simultaneously, balancing resources, timing and quality of outcomes.
  • Demonstrated competency in understanding and defining the functionality of complex systems and the interactions and dependencies in the HW and SW sub-systems
  • Ability to read and understand embedded code, firmware, application-level code, software architecture diagrams, system diagrams, data flows, and interface documentation.
  • Experience reviewing software requirements, system requirements, design documentation, test documentation, and traceability records.
  • Strong understanding of requirements management and traceability between requirements, design outputs, risk controls, verification testing, and validation evidence.
  • Hands-on experience with secure boot implementation and firmware upgrade mechanisms, including secure and reliable update processes.
  • Strong knowledge of operating-system kernels and bootloaders, including configuration, integration, debugging, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to create and review clear, complete, accurate, and well-organized technical documentation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, external    development partners, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional, matrixed product-development environment.
  • Position follows a Hybrid Work schedule with the requirement to be onsite Tuesday through Thursday

Preferred:

  • MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
  • Experience working with regulated products, medical devices, healthcare technology, life sciences products, aerospace, automotive, or other safety-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with medical device software development practices and applicable standards or regulations, such as: ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304, IEC 60601, IEC 62366
  • Cybersecurity guidance for connected medical devices
  • Experience working with CDMOs, external software development or design firms.
  • Experience supporting Design History File documentation for regulated products.
  • Experience supporting software verification, system integration testing, or validation activities.
  • Experience with requirements-management, product-lifecycle-management, or quality-management systems such as Jama, Polarion, Arena, Agile PLM, or similar platforms.
  • Participation in invention disclosures, intellectual-property development, or patent applications
