What is the difference between Senior Dsp Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Dsp Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science; experience with DSP algorithmsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science; experience with embedded systems
Work EnvironmentDeveloping signal processing algorithms for DSP chips, often in audio, communications, or radar systemsDesigning firmware for embedded devices like IoT gadgets, automotive systems, or consumer electronics
Industry UsageTelecommunications, audio processing, defense, aerospaceConsumer electronics, automotive, industrial automation

The Senior Dsp Software Engineer focuses on signal processing algorithms for DSP hardware, while the Embedded Software Engineer develops firmware for embedded systems. Both roles require similar technical backgrounds but differ in application areas and specific skill sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior DSP Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior DSP Software Engineer, you need a deep understanding of digital signal processing theory, algorithm development, and proficiency in languages like C/C++ or MATLAB, usually backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools, embedded systems, and version control systems, as well as certifications in DSP or embedded development, are typically important. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to mentor junior engineers help you excel in team-based environments. These skills ensure the efficient development and optimization of complex DSP solutions critical to high-performance products.

What are some typical challenges Senior DSP Software Engineers face when integrating algorithms into real-time embedded systems?

Senior DSP Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing algorithms to meet strict timing and memory constraints while maintaining accuracy and performance. Ensuring reliable real-time processing on embedded hardware requires close collaboration with hardware engineers and continuous profiling to identify bottlenecks. Debugging can also be complex due to limited visibility into low-level operations, so strong analytical skills and experience with specialized debugging tools are essential. Successfully addressing these challenges is key to delivering robust, high-performance DSP solutions.

What are Senior DSP Software Engineers?

Senior DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Software Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and optimize software algorithms that process digital signals, such as audio, video, or sensor data. They often work in industries like telecommunications, audio engineering, medical devices, and automotive systems, where real-time data processing is essential. Senior DSP engineers are responsible for both high-level algorithm development and low-level implementation, frequently using languages like C/C++ and MATLAB. Their expertise allows them to lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and ensure the efficiency and accuracy of signal processing systems.

Job description

Why Join Rincon Research Corporation (RRC)?

At Rincon Research Corporation, our primary business is innovating, developing, and fielding digital signal processing (DSP) products and services for the United States Defense and Intelligence Communities in support of national security.

Rincon Research Corporation seeks a DSP Engineer to create cutting edge solutions to challenging national security and defense signal processing, geolocation, and communication problems. You will work in a multi-disciplinary R&D environment with similarly skilled and motivated electrical engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists/engineers in a highly rewarding personal and professional environment.

Come join the team that is creating cutting edge signal processing, geolocation, and communication systems for the future!

What are the primary responsibilities in the Sr. DSP Engineer position?

Core responsibilities include leading the design and implementation of digital signal processing systems for communication signals, radar signals, and other applications. This includes developing, deploying, maintaining, and testing software-based solutions. System development can include algorithm design, data analysis, hardware control, computational optimization, RF system modeling, field testing, error budget analysis, operational performance analysis, writing efficient software, testing with real data, and providing applications to front-line customer facilities. A key responsibility is staying up-to-date with the signal processing technologies, tools, and methodologies and experimenting with new technologies to incorporate innovative solutions into RRC projects. RRC personnel can expect to work across all functional areas: systems engineering, development, integration and test, deployment and O&M, and experience the direct mission feedback from the customer and seeing your project provide real-world contributions that make a significant difference. You’re encouraged and expected to propose things that you believe will improve the applications and frameworks you’re working in. The ability to work unsupervised with minimal direction and the ability to self-start is a must.

What required background will make you successful?

  • Degree (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or other equivalent field
  • At least 15 years' experience in a signal processing engineering-related discipline
  • Subject matter expert in DSP, including deep knowledge of DSP theory and a track record of successful system development
  • Experience as a project technical lead and/or principle investigator
  • Experience mentoring other engineers and providing technical advice to program management
  • Proficient in C++ and/or Python in LINUX environments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain TS/SCI security clearance
  • US CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED

Preferred background:

  • Cellular communications, satellite communications, modern modulation schemes, cyclostationary techniques
  • Geolocation, radar signal processing, RF propagation and link budgets, RF system design
  • DevOps and Cloud computing Experience (Gitlab, CI/CD, CVE mitigations, Docker, Kubernetes, PIP)
  • Experience as technical lead on proposal efforts
  • Current TS/SCI clearance

Where is the position located?

This position is located at our Tucson, AZ Headquarters. Remote work/telework is not available for this position.

What benefits does RRC offer?

  • 100% employer-paid premiums for family medical and dental insurance, employee life insurance, short-term and long-term disability (STD & LTD)
  • Flexible reimbursement spending accounts for medical expense and dependent care
  • Immediate participation and vesting in the company’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and 401(k) Plan
  • Employer contributions to RRC’s ESOP
