What are some common challenges faced by Senior Development Chemists when transitioning new formulas from the lab to large-scale production?

Senior Development Chemists often encounter challenges when scaling up formulations from laboratory to manufacturing environments. These can include differences in equipment, process variability, raw material inconsistencies, and maintaining product quality at higher volumes. Effective communication with production teams and thorough documentation are essential to troubleshoot and resolve these issues efficiently. Success in this aspect of the role requires a strong understanding of both chemistry principles and practical manufacturing processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Development Chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Development Chemist, you need advanced knowledge of chemistry, formulation science, and laboratory techniques, typically supported by a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with analytical instruments (such as HPLC, GC, and spectroscopy), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and safety regulations is essential. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills set top performers apart, enabling them to lead teams and collaborate across departments. These competencies ensure the effective development, optimization, and scaling of chemical products while maintaining safety and regulatory compliance.

What are Senior Development Chemists?

Senior Development Chemists are experienced professionals who lead the design, development, and testing of new chemical products or processes. They work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, materials, and manufacturing, overseeing experiments, analyzing data, and improving product formulations. These chemists often mentor junior staff, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring innovative products to market. Their advanced expertise allows them to solve complex technical problems and drive research initiatives within their organizations.

Job description

About Phoenix Tailingsย
Phoenix Tailings is a rapidly growing clean mining and metals production startup dedicated to sustainable and economic critical metals production. Our mission is to be the worldโ€™s first fully clean mining and metals production companyโ€”unlocking the materials required for aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing whileย eliminatingย waste and emissions from mining.ย
ย
Why Phoenix Tailingsย
At Phoenix, we believe nothing great is everย accomplishedย aloneโ€”or without the passion of people who push and motivate one another.ย Youโ€™llย be joining a team building theย foundational infrastructure for the modern world, developing entirely new ways to produce rare earth and critical metals domestically, cleanly, and at scale.ย
ย
Our Values:ย ย
โ— You are only crazy if you are wrong, itโ€™s ok to be wrong
โ— Lead with Compassion
โ— Be Resourceful
โ— Listen
โ— Hustle
ย
Who We Are Looking For:ย

Phoenix Tailings is looking for aย Senior R&D Chemistย to develop andย optimizeย hydrometallurgical and extraction processes that improve the recovery, separation, and purification of critical metals. This role is for a hands-on chemist who can design experiments, interpret complex chemical systems, and turn lab-scale results into process improvements that strengthen Phoenix Tailingsโ€™ clean metals production platform. You will help build the chemistry that makes critical metals more accessible, sustainable, and ready to power the technologies of today and tomorrow.ย

ย
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and execute hydrometallurgical experiments focused on leaching, extraction, separation, purification, and recovery of critical metals and rare earth elements.ย
  • Develop and optimize solvent extraction, precipitation, crystallization, ion exchange, and related separation processes for complex feedstocks and process streams.ย
  • Evaluate the effects of pH, temperature, reagent concentration, residence time, redox conditions, phase ratios, and impurity profiles on metals recovery and selectivity. ย
  • Analyze aqueous, organic, solid, and intermediate process samples to understand extraction efficiency, metal loading, impurity behavior, and product quality. ย
  • Build process-performance relationships that connect chemistry, operating conditions, recovery, purity, reagent use, and scalability. ย
  • Identify chemical failure modes, side reactions, losses, and impurity pathways, then develop practical solutions to improve process reliability and efficiency.ย
  • Support the translation of bench-scale chemistry into larger experimental systems that advance Phoenix Tailingsโ€™ clean metals production technology. ย
  • Prepare clear experimental plans, technical reports, data summaries, and recommendations that guide R&D priorities and process development decisions. ย
Qualifications:
  • PhDย in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Hydrometallurgy, or a related field.ย
  • 2โ€“3+ years of experience in hydrometallurgy, solvent extraction, separations chemistry, critical metals recovery, rare earth processing, extractive metallurgy, or related applied chemical R&D. ย
  • Hands-on experience designing and running leaching, extraction, precipitation, crystallization, ion exchange, or purification experiments. ย
  • Strong understanding of aqueous chemistry, metal speciation, pH control, redox chemistry, complexation, phase behavior, and separation selectivity. ย
  • Experience analyzing process samples and interpreting chemical data to improve recovery, purity, reagent efficiency, and process stability. ย
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as ICP-OES/MS, XRF, XRD, IC, HPLC, UV-Vis, titration, or related characterization tools.ย
We offer a competitive compensation package that is based on expertise. We also offer the following benefits:
This pay range reflects best estimate for the total cash compensation which includes salary + discretionary bonus for this role. Total packageย  may vary based on experience and qualifications.
Pay Range: $130,000- $170,000 total cash compensation plus equity
  • Healthcare: 100% Medical, dental, and vision coverage for employee.
  • Stock Options: Ownership in a fast-growing venture-backed company.ย
  • Time Off: Unlimited PTO.ย
  • Learning: Learning and development opportunities to grow your skills and career.ย
At Phoenix Tailings, we have an open culture that values learning, and we are looking to grow the team with enthusiastic individuals who share our vision of sustainable mining.ย ย
