What is a senior data warehouse developer?

Senior Data Warehouse Developers are experienced IT professionals who design, build, and maintain large-scale data storage solutions known as data warehouses. Their work involves extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) data from various sources to ensure it is structured and accessible for business intelligence and analytics. They collaborate with data analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders to optimize data architecture and ensure high performance, security, and reliability of data systems. Typically, they also mentor junior developers and play a key role in setting data management standards and best practices.

How does a senior data warehouse developer typically collaborate with data analysts and business stakeholders?

Senior Data Warehouse Developers frequently work closely with data analysts and business stakeholders to understand specific reporting requirements and translate them into efficient data models. They participate in meetings to gather requirements, clarify data needs, and explain technical constraints or possibilities. Additionally, they support analysts by ensuring data accuracy, optimizing query performance, and troubleshooting data issues. This collaborative approach helps align the data warehouse solutions with business goals and ensures stakeholders receive actionable insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior data warehouse developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Warehouse Developer, you need advanced SQL expertise, strong data modeling skills, and experience with ETL processes, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with data warehouse platforms (such as Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, or Microsoft SQL Server), ETL tools (like Informatica or Talend), and relevant certifications are highly valued. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with stakeholders and ensure data quality. These skills and qualities are crucial for designing scalable data solutions, optimizing performance, and supporting business intelligence initiatives.

Job description

Senior Data Engineer
Denver, CO
YES Communities, founded in 2008, owns and operates nearly 300 manufactured housing communities with locations across the United States. YES takes a new approach to manufactured home communities and works to build and maintain an environment in each community that reflects their positive YES attitude.
We're looking for a Senior Data Engineer to own and evolve the enterprise data platform that powers reporting, analytics, planning, and automation across the company. You'll build scalable pipelines, integrations, and data models that transform operational data into trusted data used throughout the organization.
As a key member of our team, you'll help shape the future of our data platform by influencing architecture decisions and modernizing core data infrastructure. Your work will support operational teams, executives, and institutional investors, and you'll partner closely with BI, FP&A, IT, and business stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable data solutions that drive better business decisions.
Why YES?
At YES Communities, we invest in the people who build our data platform as much as the platform itself. You'll join a team where your technical judgment is trusted, your ideas on architecture and process are heard, and your growth is treated as a priority. We set clear goals and then trust you to run with them, giving you the ownership to solve problems your way while knowing your work directly shapes how leaders across the company make decisions. We're building a diverse, collaborative team, and we take pride in watching our engineers grow into the go-to experts on our data and platform.
What You'll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines using Azure Data Factory, SSIS, and SQL Server to integrate operational data into the enterprise data warehouse
  • Develop and optimize enterprise data models, views, and semantic layers that serve as the trusted source of truth for reporting and analytics, including modernizing legacy stored procedure logic into more maintainable structures
  • Engineer and maintain API integrations with third-party platforms and vendor systems
  • Monitor pipeline health and data quality by implementing automated validation, reconciliation, and alerting so issues are caught before they reach the business
  • Tune query and pipeline performance, and recommend architectural improvements as data volumes and business needs grow
  • Champion engineering best practices across the team - version control, code review, testing, and documentation - and contribute to data governance through metadata management, lineage, and metric definition
  • Partner with BI developers, analysts, FP&A, IT, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into well-modeled, high-performing data solutions
  • Deliver accurate, timely data that supports recurring operational, financial, executive, and investor reporting
  • Evaluate and adopt modern data engineering technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, where they improve engineering quality, productivity, or platform reliability

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on data engineering experience designing and maintaining production ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex query development, performance tuning, and working with large relational datasets in SQL Server or a comparable database platform
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with various business stakeholders and guiding technical peers to appropriate solutions
  • Experience building and orchestrating pipelines with Azure Data Factory, SSIS, or similar integration tools
  • Experience developing data models, views, and semantic layers that serve enterprise reporting and analytics
  • Working knowledge of API-based integrations with third-party systems and vendor platforms
  • Proficiency with version control and engineering best practices, including code review, testing, and documentation
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions for non-technical stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
